The demise of Bin Laden may have been timed to fan the embers of US patriotism and appetite for war

May 2, 2011 in Talking Politics, World Unrest

Cynical but Worth Considering, Nonetheless

Bin Laden’s assassination is sure to draw retaliation from  Al Qaida. Who knows what it will be, but it is certain to fan the flames of American patriotism–just exactly at a time when the American people  are weary of war and are demanding that our troops be brought home and more attention be paid to our domestic needs which are great and many.

Perhaps the killing of Osama Bin Laden on the day that George Bush announced “mission accomplished” is anything but an accident.  Perhaps it is a military strategy that was specifically designed to fan the embers of  a dying war and justify more killing and Wall Street War profiteering.  After all, the compound where Bin Laden was found has been there since 2005–for six years!

If Al Qaida is smart, they will not retaliate.  Let’s hope for all our sakes that they are smart.

Who says we can’t/shouldn’t return to paper ballots? Not the Dutch, that’s for certain!

June 14, 2010 in Talking Politics

On June 7, 2010, Dutch voters went to the polls to elect a new parliament. Each voter entered the voting booth, unfolded a large piece of paper, and used a red pencil to check a box next to their preferred candidate. Not one voting machine was used.

The Dutch returned to voting with pencils because computers can’t guarantee the privacy of voters. The return to voting with a pencil has attracted interest from democracies around the world. The Netherlands is the first country to go back to voting with paper ballots, after making the transition to computers. Other countries are wondering if they should follow the Dutch example.

Look out in 2010: Tea Partiers are getting an education

November 14, 2009 in Strategies, Talking Politics

Tea Partiers are getting trained as real political activists.

Drew Ryun, executive director of American Majority whose mission is training a national network of activists committed to limited government,  is practicing the art of political organizing.

From a recent Dallas hotel conference room:

“You want to know what you can do to turn the tide in this country?  We all share common values as conservatives.  We all want to hold our elected officials accountable, but here’s a test:  Who here can name every member of your school board?”  Silence.

“OK. so what are you so pissed about?  The people that make the decisions are the ones that actually get elected to office,” Ryun says.  “If you don’t know who the people are that are making the decisions that  most directly affect you, what are so mad at?”

Ryun helped his twin brother Ned launch American Majority in January 2008.  they are sons of former Kansas Republican Congressman Jim Ryun, whom the National review ranked as the most conservative member of Congress in 2006.

American Majority has a field office in Dallas.  Since it opened in late May, the group has held 12 training sessions (half for activists, half for candidates), with six more on this year’s calendar.  Ryun says American Majority’s goal for 2010 is a thousand new activists and 100 candidates running in Texas.

They are being trained to win elections at the grassroots.  Go to their site and see all the various training sessions that they are offering.

Thoughts on Ron Paul–He is looking better by the day

November 3, 2009 in Talking Politics

I’ve always said that I agree with about 50% of what he stands for and disagree with the other 50%.

If he is speaking the truth, and I think he is, he would bring our troops home immediately.

He would not allow government to bail out Wall Street.  All companies would be given the equal right to thrive or fail.

He would restructure the Federal Reserve System in such a way that it would serve the people.

          ************************************************************

The part where I disagree with him is that I do believe that we need to pay taxes to support a healthcare system for all Americans, to support our infrastructure, and to support a defense system [one that is not based on "pre-emptive" strikes against other nations, but one that nonetheless will  ensure the safety of Americans if attacked]

          **************************************************************

But I look at what the Bush Administration did and I look at what the Obama administration is doing (continuing war and giving away taxpayer money to support Wall Street and the rich, and their weak support for real healthcare reform–support that more and more looks like a give-away to the very predators who are running the death factories that we call “private health care insurance”– and I think:  “Well, at least with Ron Paul I would be represented by 50% of what I want and that is 50% more representation than I’m getting now.

I wonder how many other Progressives and Liberals are thinking in these terms?

Remembering the Republicans who supported common decency–unlike 30 other Republican Senators who chose Halliburton over humanity

October 11, 2009 in Talking Politics

Go here to read the bill and see the complete list of who voted how.

It is more than telling that no Democrat male or female,  and no female Republican supported Halliburton over a young woman who had been gang-raped by 7 men. Even Kay Bailey Hutchison, a Texan who throughout her career has done nothing but rubber stamp Bush and Cheney legislation for Halliburton stood up for common decency and voted in favor of justice.

Only six Republican men out of 36 had the decency to stand up for a young rape victim.

Senator Robert Foster Bennett Republican Utah must have remembered his own daughters (Julie, Wendy, Heather and Heidi) when he listened to Jamie Leigh Jone’s testimony as well as his faith in God.  He chose Jamie Leigh Jones over Halliburton

            Collins Republican Maine

            Photobucket
Grassley Iowa (I respect Senator Grassley for not stooping so low as to disregard a young woman who had been gang-raped, but because of his outright lies about death panels over a period of two week in August of 2009 in an effort to discredit health care reform, he does not deserve a place of honor. )
            Photobucket
            Kay Bailey Hutchison Texas
Once in a while Senator Hutchison gets things right (unlike John Cornyn, her counter part, who never does).  In this case, she stood on the side of common decency even if it meant voting against a Texas corporation.
            Photobucket
            Orrin Hatch Utah
I’ m guessing that his daughters and granddaughters  played a part in his choosing Jamie’s constitutional right to a real trial  over Halliburton’s kangaroo court.

Senator LeMieux Florida (at 40, he is the youngest member of the Senate)  He might have been thinking about his own three children when he listened to Jamie Leigh Jones testimony.

Richard Lugar Indiana -Senator Lugar has four sons.

Senator Lisa Murkowski Alaska - she has two children.

This is a great tool.  I just discovered it this morning and learned how the House Balked at a Food Safety Bill.  Here is an excerpt from some of the comments on that at themiddleclass.org sit:
              • The House of Representatives failed to pass legislation modernizing the country’s outdated and ineffective food safety system. The legislation would have increased the frequency of inspections of food plants, improved inspector access to plant records, and provided a stable funding source for the expansions of oversight included in the bill.
              • The debate about health care reform is raging. Draft bills circulating in the House and Senate would expand coverage to millions of uninsured Americans. While skyrocketing health care costs still need to be addressed, critics of the reform plans are offering only tired cliches and discredited alternatives in opposition.

Goes to show you: You can’t legislate morality.

July 11, 2009 in Foreign Affairs, Humanity, Real Change, Talking Politics

Queen’s Comments: Reading in this morning’s Pakistan News I came across a story about over hundred Indians who recently died of alcohol poisoning in the Indian state of Gujarat, India’s only dry state.  I thought about all those who think that they can legislate abortion by making it illegal.  Statistics say again and again that they are wrong.  Incidents of abortion along with deaths by abortion are much higher in countries where abortion is illegal than in countries where it is not illegal.  You would think that people would learn that morality cannot be legislated.

In the USA, however, we are particularly hard-headed when it comes to learning this lesson.  Again and again we try to legislate morality thinking that if we make certain acts “illegal” that we can prevent them.  As a result, the USA has 5% of the world’s population, but we have 25% of the world’s incarcerated people.

                ****************************************************

                From Pakistan News:

NEW DELHI: The death toll from a case of mass poisoning involving home-brewed alcohol in the western Indian state of Gujarat rose to 107 on Friday, police said. The number of deaths was up from the 86 reported as of Thursday.

Senior police officer Abhay Chudasama told AFP that 194 other people were being treated in hospital in the state’s largest city Ahmedabad after drinking the contaminated liquor at a party on Sunday. Selling or consuming alcohol is a criminal offence in Gujarat, India’s only dry state and the birthplace of Mahatma Gandhi.

Deaths from cheap alcohol are common in India and last year nearly 170 people died after drinking a same batch of toxic liquor in southern India.

The Press Trust of India reported that more than 800 bootleggers have been arrested in a recent crackdown on illegal brewers.

Maybe the Democratic Progressives should form an alliance with the libertarian/populists

July 10, 2009 in Democrats in Action, Talking Politics

QUEEN’S COMMENTS:  REALLY WHY NOT? The Democratic progressives, who in spite of the fact that Barack Obama would NEVER have won the Democratic Primary without us, are now shunned by him.  We do not have one single representative in his cabinet.  Instead, he chose the Clinton Rat Pack.  If the people had wanted a re-run of the Clinton regime we would have selected Hillary during our Primary.

                  ****************************************************************

SOMETHING IS BETTER THAN NOTHING AND “NOTHING” IS WHAT BOTH GROUPS CAN OBVIOUSLY EXPECT FROM THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION.

True, it would be an uneasy alliance at best,  and the people on each side would feel a bit like we were making a pact with the devil, but the fact is that we do agree on a few things and we would both get some of the legislation passed that we agree upon.  Here are some issues that I can think of off the top of my head.

                  1.  NO MONEY FOR IMF

                  2. NO MORE UNCHECKED POWERS FOR THE EXECUTIVE OFFICE–no more abuse of signing statements

                  3. NO BAILOUTS TO BANKS

                  4. MORE EMPHASIS ON JOBS FOR PEOPLE AT HOME

                  5. AUDIT THE FEDERAL RESERVE
