Why do I love Bernie Sanders? Let me count the ways!

Year in Review

Looking back at 2010, The Nation named Bernie the “Most Valuable Senator.” The the oldest and largest progressive magazine in the country said he was progressive, populist and practical enough to get things done. “During the health care debate Sanders argued mightily for single-payer and a public option. He got neither, but he did secure a provision doubling the number of Federally Qualified Health Centers, which should increase the number of patients receiving primary care by at least 18 million during the coming decade. Later in the year he amended the final financial services reform bill to require the Federal Reserve to disclose [how] … big banks and multinational corporations collected an estimated $3.3 trillion in ‘emergency’ loans and other assistance even as they refused to restructure mortgages or make loans to small businesses in Vermont and other states.” Read The Progressive Honor Roll of 2010 »

More reflections during the lame duck week: You are the gift.

December 29, 2010 in Gifts, Heros, Peace

One of the thoughts that I always reflect upon during the lame duck week of the year is a four word sentence that I once heard a minister say almost twenty years ago:  You are the gift. It changed my life.  It began my journey in search of my authentic self.  There are few words that are more true and yet so many of us spend life times never bringing forth our special gift, our own light for the world.  Each of us is like a snowflake–alike and yet unique in our individual shape.  Yet so many of us spend our entire lives trying to look like the rest–and the world is not better off for it.

Being brought up in Texas, I was raised to be polite, and being a female this lesson was doubled down on.  Frankly, I don’t think there are any people on the planet who are more polite than Texans and that may be part of our problem.  That may be why we have 19 coal plants in our state and why we don’t do anything when our governor and his rich pals decided to turn our state into a nuclear waste dump or when over-worked human beings at Pantex in March of 2005 almost blew our state and several with it off the map.  We are just too damn polite to call the people in Austin the bastards that they really are and replace them and tell them “hell no.”

As I’ve grown older, I’ve gained the courage to allow my raw anger and indignation to show. Even though I’ve been on my own personal quest for my authentic self for almost 20 years now, I’m still not certain what my special gift is.  Today–especially following about three days of some extremely angry and indignant posts, I’m wondering if perhaps my raw anger and indignation are not my special gifts.

The legendary Greek hero, Odysseus (called Ulysses in Latin)  ruled the island kingdom of Ithaka.  After the Trojan War, Odysseus roamed the world for 10 years in finding his way back to Ithaka.  Odysseus had many big adventures and each of these adventures changed him. He freed his men from the pleasure-giving drugs of the Lotus-Eaters, rescued them from the cannibalism of the Cyclopes and the enchantments of Circe. He even braved the terrors of the underworld.   In our modern English language today his name has evolved to Odyssey–which means a long journey with lots of twists and turns that can, like Odysseus’s journey, be frightening, exhaustive and exhilarating, but above all transforming.  Perhaps it is all these adventures of life that we have that peel away our outer layers and ultimately reveal our authentic selves and our gift(s).

In modern times Abraham Maslow is perhaps the one person who has devoted the most ink in advocating human beings to nurture the authentic self” –that core part of each human being that he believed that we all strive toward. The finding of our gift Maslow called “self-actualization”.

Are we there yet, as a nation and as a people? No, I think not. To borrow from Robert Frost on the matter:

“. . .The woods are lovely, dark and deep.
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep. . .”

But if you may allow me a bit of optimism, I am filled with the hope that we may yet reach Ithaka.

Pelosi muscles a $154 billion jobs bill through the House but with no help from Van Hollen, Chairman of the DSCC

December 17, 2009 in Bailout, Heros

Huffington Post reports that Pelosi managed to get a $154 illion jobs bill through the house on Wednesday just before Congress departs for a holiday recess.  Not a single Republican approved the bill.  38 Democrats from Rahm Emanuel’s  and Obama’s camp voted with Republicans.

The jobs bill would use $75 billion in money earmarket for the Wall Street bailout and redirect it to infrastructure investment and aid to states.  The bill alos extends the dudration of COBRA from nine months to 15 months and extends the deadline for eligibility from December 31 2009 to June 30 2010 and expands a child tax credit to 16 million families.

        *********************************************************************

REMEMBER DEMOCRATS: Chris Van Hollen is chairman of the DSCC.  This is the committee who take donations from people like us and hand them over to Democrats who are running for Congress.  Now what kind of democrat do you think he is going to be giving your money to?

THAT’S RIGHT–THE KIND OF DEMOCRAT WHO VOTES AGAINST JOB CREATION FOR MILLIONS OF AMERICANS.

Do not give a dime to the DSCC or the DNC!  They represent more of the same–government of the rich, by the rich and for the rich.

THE REAL REASON THAT LIEBERMAN OPPOSES REAL HEALTH CARE REFORM

November 1, 2009 in Healthcare, Heros

A REAL WELFARE KING AND QUEEN

ONE OF THE MANY “POWER COUPLES” WORKING THE CORPORATE WELFARE SYSTEM.  Unlike Ronald Reagan’s Welfare Queen who was a propaganda prop for the right-wing, these people are real and they are bilking Americans out of more than money.  They are taking our lives too–at the rate of 42,000 a year.

Prior to signing on to Hill & Knowlton, Hadassah has also worked for the lobbying company, APCO Associates, that had many pharmaceutical and healthcare corporations among its clients, as well as four major drug companies such as Pfizer. SOURCE

When Mrs. Lieberman signed on with the Hill & Knowlton in March of 2005, GlaxoSmithKline, the huge British-based drug company that makes vaccines along with many other drugs. In April of 2005, a month after his wife joined Hill and Knowlton Senator Lieberman introduced a bill that would awared bilions of dollars in new “incentives” to companies like GlaxoSmithKline to persuade them to make more new vaccines. The bill was written by Chuck Ludlan, a former pharmaceutical industry lobbyist who then worked on the Connecticut senator’s staff. From his office to his bedroom, Lieberman is totally surrounded by current and former employees of Big Pharma. SOURCE

Alan now has a new site where you can donate:  the site is called Congressman with Guts. Telling isn’t it that the domain name was available–doesn’t speak too well for the number of congressmen with guts. ]

SO IF  YOU WANT ALAN TO STICK AROUND, PLEASE GO TO CONGRESSMAN WITH GUTS AND GIVE UNTIL IT HURTS.

Here are a few other elected officials who are at the top of my list for those with guts.  These people will stand up and call it the way it is.  I love them all.  GIVE THEM MONEY TOO!  I don’t have links for Sanders and Waters donation sites.

            1. Rep.  Alan Grayson (Florida)
            2. Senator Patrick Leahy (VT)
            3. Senator Bernie Sanders (VT)
