Where do solutions begin? Replacing Congress with Members of the 99%

November 21, 2011 in Community, Economy

and instead of investing our money in an unstable Casino/Multilevel Marketing Scheme called “Wall Street, bring it on home to local investment in local cooperatives–a business model built on social justice, not personal me-first greed.

We don’t hear much about cooperatives in the USA–and no wonder since our media is totally controlled by the 1% whose fortunes are all tied up the the multilevel marketing scheme they call “Wall Street”.  Why do you  think they want to privatize Social Security?  They need a new source of cash to rob from the people and the Social Security coffers are about all we have left.  The Wall Street jackals in Washington would like nothing better than to “invest” the huge nest  egg of workers into their black hole in space where money disappears faster than you can say “Offshore Account” or “Preferred Shareholder” or “my personal golden parachute created from other people’s money.”   We need to turn our backs on these people and create our own solutions, promote our own politicians–not one of their cookie cutter Party sock monkeys for Wall Street.  BOTH political parties are run just like Wall Street.  You want to be on their inner circle, then you damn well better have plenty of money–otherwise you are worthless to them.

Here is what you won’t read or hear on mainstream media:  Cooperatives have been around for a long time and they are a global force to be reckoned with.  Cooperatives provide 100 million jobs worldwide.  The contribute $1.6 trillion to the economy.  Fifty percent of all agriculture in the world is produced by cooperatives.

And now is the time and 2012 is the YEAR OF THE COOPERATIVES.  The video below features ILO’s Juan Somavia who addressed ICA’s Cancun conference recently held (Nov 14-18) in Cancun. Juan Somavía (born April 11, 1941) is the current Director-General of the International Labour Organization (ILO).

A peaceful Nicaraguan Election Brings a mandate for Sandinista Social programs

    November 18, 2011 in Community

Joy on Election Day November 10 Nicaragua

According to Nicaragua’s Supreme Electoral Council (CSE), between 78 and 80 percent of Nicaragua’s 3.3 million eligible voters participated in the November 6th election, re-electing Sandinista President Daniel Ortega with more than 62 percent of the vote and sending a Sandinista majority to the National Assembly. The most popular of the four opposition candidates, radio personality and former Contra supporter Fabio Gadea of the Independent Liberal Party Alliance (PLI) received just over 31 percent of the vote. In a country where many people have long associated Ortega with the civil war and economic suffering caused by U.S. policy toward Nicaragua in the 1980s, this result is a remarkable mandate for the President’s extensive social programs.

Vallejos Urbina lives in an informal squatter settlement without paved streets, sewers, and reliable water and electricity. The Sandinista government recently changed her family’s life, however, by giving the family a title to the land they live on, as the government will have done to 136,000 other Nicaraguan families by the end of 2011. The titles mean official integration into Nicaraguan public life and often lead to sewers, paved roads, and improved water and electric services.

The old conservative dogs in Congress better suck it up and get on the bus that is turning left before it leaves without them.

The same movie is being played all over the world and there are too many of us and our momentum is too great to stop. We will have justice and equality for all

Let’s hear it for Cooperatives! Values-based business models build a better world!

November 12, 2011 in Community, Corporations

2012 is the International Year of  Cooperatives.   A year sponsored by the United Nations. Perhaps people will learn that there are many business models that work better than Wall Street.

The UN’s goals for the IYC are to:

        • Increase public awareness about co-operatives and their contributions to socio-economic development and the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals.
        • Promote the formation and growth of co-operatives.
        • Encourage governments to establish policies, laws and regulations conducive to the formation, growth and stability of co-operatives.

Seed-Mothers in India Confront Climate Insecurity

BHUBANESWAR, India, Jul 1, 2011 (IPS) – In eastern Orissa state’s tribal hinterlands about 200 ‘seed-mothers’ are on mission mode – identifying, collecting and conserving traditional seed varieties and motivating farming families to use them.

The seed-mothers (bihana-maa in the local dialect) from the Koya and Kondh tribal communities have reached 1,500 families in the Malkangiri and Kandhamal districts and are still counting. These women are formidable storehouses of knowledge on indigenous seeds and biodiversity conservation.

Collecting, multiplying and distributing through exchange local varieties of paddy, millet, legume, vegetables and leafy green seeds, the seed-mothers already have a solid base of 80 converted villages.

As they spread their message through the hinterland, targeting another 140 villages, the women also promote zero dependence on chemical fertilisers and pesticides. MORE

Mother Seeds in Resistance:  Saving Native Mayan Corn

Heritage seed-stocks of land race indigenous corn in Mexico are being infected by genetically-engineered corn imported by multinational companies from the United States under the terms of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).  The magnitude of this horror (it is far more than a problem) for indigenous people is hard to explain to outsiders. Click here for some information on the potential threats to our planet and to our health associated with gmo contamination.

According to a Tzotzil Maya elder from Chiapas:  “During the last five centuries while our people have withstood suffering – enormous sufferings- our corn has allowed us to survive.  Now our corn is suffering and we must give back to the corn what it has given us . . . we must help the corn withstand its suffering from the transgenic infections brought on by the greed of the transnational corporations and the bad governments.  That way corn, and the people of the corn, will both be able to survive together.”

            Keepers of the Seeds

For 14 years, Caroline Chartrand, a Metis woman who recently traveled from Winnipeg, Canada, to the 8th annual Great Lakes Indigenous Farming Conference, has been looking for the heritage seeds of her people. It is believed that in the 1800s, the Metis grew some 120 distinct seed varieties in the Red River area of Canada. Of those, Caroline says, “We ended up finding about 20 so far.”

In Canada, three-quarters of all the crop varieties that existed before the 20th century are extinct. And, of the remaining quarter, only 10 percent are available commercially from Canadian seed companies (the remainder are held by gardeners and families). Over 64 percent of the commercially heldseeds are offered by only one company; if those varieties are dropped, theseeds may be lost.

That’s the reason Caroline and about 100 other indigenous farmers and gardeners—along with students and community members—gathered in March on the White Earth reservation in Northern Minnesota to share knowledge, stories, and, of course, seeds.  MORE

Golden voiced homeless man in Columbus OH scores a job!

                January 5, 2011 in Community

Before this week, the name “Ted Williams” most likely brought to mind the phrase “Teddy Ballgame.” Now, the name has become synonymous with “Golden-voiced,” as a homeless man with that moniker has shot to stardom as a result of his breathtaking vocal chords.

Recently, Columbia Dispatch videographer Doral Chenoweth III filmed a brief interview with the Brooklyn-born Williams, who — until recently — panhandled on the corner of I-71 and Hudson Street in Cleveland.

Yesterday, the video went viral, and has (at the time of this posting) racked up more than 5 million views on YouTube.

At last report Mr. Williams has received anywhere from 70 to 80 job offers

GOOD! Perhaps between MoveOn and the AFL-CIO we can have some truth sandwiched into the lies told by Republican and Tea Party Candidates who are solely owned by the rich elite who fund their campaigns.

Local communities need to start connecting the dots and kick the Chamber of Commerce out of their city and local governments! If you go online to almost any local community such as Plano Texas you will see that the Chamber of Commerce has its Republican ass embedded into the local government. Their influence is reflected in such actions as paying Wall Street corporations like Pizza Hut over $2 million dollars in cash and tax incentives to move their corporate headquarters to Plano. What did the citizens of Plano get for this? They got their property taxes raised to cover this handout to Wall Street, but your can bet your Texas boots that the rich conservatives in the Chamber of Commerce will lay the blame on social programs and not their Wall Street Handouts.

Citizens need to wise up to who their local governments really represent.

WHAT YOU DON’T KNOW ABOUT CARRIED INTEREST COULD DESTROY YOUR COMMUNITY

February 24, 2010 in Community, Economics and Ideology

For those of you who understand what carried interest is, excuse me while I insult your intelligence for the sake of those who may not know.  Understanding not only the meaning of, but also the significance of carried interest is important for the majority of Americans to understand because carried interest plays a part in the destruction of the fabric of communities.

According to a recent report from USPIRG: Tax carried interest, a major source of income for hedge-fund managers, at the same rate that all other Americans are taxed on their income–not at 15%. [Savings for the MAJORITY of American taxpayer by 2015: $15.6 billion.]

Yes, if we closed the loophole for carried interest, this one act would reduce our deficit by $15.6 billion in only five years.  But there is a much better reason for closing this particular tax loophole.  It destroys neighborhoods.

                    **********************************************************

Buyout guys like Henry Kravitz decide to buy a company. They find a company they want to buy.  It may be in your community.

Their goal is to make money from the company—but not by growing the company, by hiring more people, by making better more competitive products—no their goal is a destructive, evil and self-serving goal—to make money for themselves and their investors.  To heck with the people in the community.  Wall Street with the anonymity that it provides investors makes the perfect tool.

The buyout/private equity people like Kravitz get some investors to put some cash down.

He borrows the rest from banks

Now here is the trick:  when you buy a house or car, you have to pay back the loan.  But thanks to loopholes, created with the help of Congressmen like Sam Johnson, the buyout guys don’t have to pay back their loans.

The company they just bought is responsible for the debt—not them.

Now this company has some big loan payments to make and this makes the money tight.

So private equity investors like Mr. Kravitz and his pals  have layoffs and sell offs. [That means jobs of ordinary Americans.]

The debt of the company brings other bonuses—lower taxes.  That’s right.  Same company same product.  Just less taxes.

Because of all the new debt, the company gets to pay a lot less taxes  which of course means less money for schools and roads and hospitals in your community.

THEN THERE IS CAPITAL GAINS.  WHEN A PRIVATE EQUITY COMPANY SELLS THE COMPANY, THE BUYOUT GUYS TAKE 20%.  That’s called carried interest. AND the carried interest that buyout guys like Kravitz collects gets taxed at only 15%.   While people like Kravitz make more than a million dollars a day, they get taxed at a lower rate than most ordinary Americans pay.

WHAT ABOUT THE ROADS AND THE SCHOOLS?

                    *****************************************************

THREE SENTENCE SUMMARY AND REMEMBER THAT CARRIED INTEREST IS ONE OF THE INCENTIVES FOR PRIVATE EQUITY INVESTORS TO DESTROY COMMUNITIES. As voters, we can remove that incentive by voting for candidates who don’t support it.

                    Buy a company

Run it into a whole lotta debt.

The company gets a big loan and you  lose your job and home.

Because of the selloffs, people in your community lose their jobs.  Your community loses the benefits of improved roads and schools that it would receive if people like Kravitz were not allowed to do this to communities and were made to pay their fair share of taxes.  These leveraged buyouts have a downhill domino effect on the economy of a community.
