Mourning the possible loss of rich metaphorical language–our connection to one another, to nature, to the full life

February 8, 2012 in Humanity

As of late, I’ve been giving much thought to language and particularly the language of politicians and its power to distort the truth and manipulate us down  ugly, narrow, mean paths of willful blindness and purposeful ignorance–a path that will eventually deliver us to  annihilation, not only of ourselves as a species, but perhaps our entire planet.  As our language becomes more limited and narrowly circumscribed, we are moving faster like stupid lemmings to the sea of our own destruction.

Perhaps there is no stopping any of the insanity,  Perhaps it is all part of some evil and useless destiny that was long ago fashioned as the script for humanity by some small-minded, mean-spirited god.  Or perhaps it is that somewhere along the way, the worst among us have stolen the pen from god’s hand and have shifted the once and great design for humanity down a narrow, dark, dirty alley strewn with garbage and noise of our own making where there was once music.

As we lose our connection to nature and our rich language with its abundant metaphors and complexity of expression,. we also lose our ability to be fully present in the moment and our ability to communicate that connection not only to others, but to ourselves as well.  As we lose these important connections to nature and to a rich language that adequately describes these connections, we are less grounded.  We are ships without moorings let loose upon an rolling and irrational sea.  Thus we are frightened and more easily manipulated by those who would steer us in directions that promise a safe and calm harbor,

________________________________________________________________

Most Americans are Disconnected and They Don’t  Even Realize It–much less the vulnerability that comes with being disconnected.

It is amazing if you will notice how few people are fully present in the moment where they are.  You walk down the street and every other person is either wearing an ear bud and talking to an invisible person, or they have their thumbs engaged on the tiny lap top of their cell phone as they walk down the street.  No doubt countless thousands of accidents happen every year simply because of the relationship that people have with their electronic devices instead of being fully present in the moment with the physical world that surrounds them.

Maintaining an awareness and connection to nature takes some effort these days–especially if one lives in an urban setting.  Still it is well worth the effort.  One of the things that I do is to keep track of the moon’s phases. Tonight, for example, February 7, 2012, is the full moon.  I went out and gazed up at it for a full five minutes tonight.  There is something about looking at the moon that puts me in my perspective and grounds my place and significance within the human spectrum and my connectivity to a larger pattern within the fabric of nature.  To think that the moon has shone for so many years on so many people before me is a very large and comforting thought.  And I wondered tonight:  how many people here in the Dallas area are even aware that tonight is a full moon?  I wonder how many of us looked at the moon tonight.  How many of us were there who appreciated the moon tonight?

I’m currently reading again East of Eden  by John Steinbeck.  It’s a wonderful saga and I love the story and I love Steinbeck’s rich descriptions of Salinas Valley and the area around Monterey Bay–places that I’ve visited several times and love.  It’s this book, combined with my own recent commentaries on the current political newspeak, that seem to be taking over the national dialogue of late that have cast me into my somewhat nostalgic frame of mind tonight.

The remark by the ancient philosopher, Heraclitus, that we never can step into the same river twice is certainly true for me in regard to a return reading of book that I once enjoyed.  Because I have changed, I always have a different, usually richer experience than the last time I read the book.

This time, as I read Cyrus’s explanation to his son Adam about the nature of a soldier, bold harsh brush strokes of truth stood plainly bare before me.  To experience the importance of language –I share a lesson from John Steinbeck about “soldiering” written 60 years ago.

The Best Description of “Soldiering” that I ever read.

“Cyrus explained softly to Adam the nature of a soldier.  Look now–in all of history men have been taught that killing of men is an evil thing not to be countenanced.  Any man who kills must be destroyed because this is the worst sin we know.  And them we take a soldier and put murder in his hands and we say to him, “Use it wisely.”  We put no check on him.  Go out and kill as many of a certain kind or classification of your brothers as you can.  And we will reward you for it. , , ,You’ll go in soon now–you’ve come of age.”

“I don’t want to,” Adam said quickly.

“. . . And I want to tell you so you won’t be surprised.  They’ll first strip off your clothes, but they’ll go deeper than that.  They’ll shuck off any little dignity you have–you’ll lose what you think of as your decent right to live and to be let alone to live.  They’ll make you live and eat and sleep and shit close to other men.  And when they dress you up again you’ll not be able to tell yourself from the others.  You can’t even wear a scrap or pin a note on your breast to say, ‘This is me–separate from the rest.’ . . .After a while, you’ll thin no thought the others do not think.  You’ll know no word the others can’t say.  And you’ll do things because the others do them.  You’ll feel the danger in any difference whatever–a danger to the whole crowd of like-thinking, like-acting men.”

“What if I don’t?” Adam demanded.

” Yes,” Cyrus said, “sometimes that happens.  Once in a while there is a man who own’t do what is demanded of him, and do you know what happens?  The whole machine devotes itself coldly to the destruction of his difference.  They’ll beat your spirit and your nerves, your body and your mind, with iron rods until the dangerous difference goes out of you.  and if you can’t finally given in, they’ll vomit you up and leave you stinking up outside–neither part of themselves nor yet free.  It’s better to fall in with them.  A thing so triumphantly illogical, so beautifully senseless as an army can’t allow a question to weaken it.”

Where do solutions begin? Replacing Congress with Members of the 99%

November 21, 2011 in Community, Economy

and instead of investing our money in an unstable Casino/Multilevel Marketing Scheme called “Wall Street, bring it on home to local investment in local cooperatives–a business model built on social justice, not personal me-first greed.

We don’t hear much about cooperatives in the USA–and no wonder since our media is totally controlled by the 1% whose fortunes are all tied up the the multilevel marketing scheme they call “Wall Street”.  Why do you  think they want to privatize Social Security?  They need a new source of cash to rob from the people and the Social Security coffers are about all we have left.  The Wall Street jackals in Washington would like nothing better than to “invest” the huge nest  egg of workers into their black hole in space where money disappears faster than you can say “Offshore Account” or “Preferred Shareholder” or “my personal golden parachute created from other people’s money.”   We need to turn our backs on these people and create our own solutions, promote our own politicians–not one of their cookie cutter Party sock monkeys for Wall Street.  BOTH political parties are run just like Wall Street.  You want to be on their inner circle, then you damn well better have plenty of money–otherwise you are worthless to them.

Here is what you won’t read or hear on mainstream media:  Cooperatives have been around for a long time and they are a global force to be reckoned with.  Cooperatives provide 100 million jobs worldwide.  The contribute $1.6 trillion to the economy.  Fifty percent of all agriculture in the world is produced by cooperatives.

And now is the time and 2012 is the YEAR OF THE COOPERATIVES.  The video below features ILO’s Juan Somavia who addressed ICA’s Cancun conference recently held (Nov 14-18) in Cancun. Juan Somavía (born April 11, 1941) is the current Director-General of the International Labour Organization (ILO).

There goes the neighborhood: A retired police captain is arrested as an OWS protestor

November 20, 2011 in Humanity, Occupy

Captain Ray Lewis Philadelphia Police Department – Retired.

Speaking on a television interview with Chris Hedges, Captain Lewis who was retired and comfortable, living in what he described as a Walden Pond environment, was so stirred by the conviction and dedication of the Occupiers to social justice that he left his comfortable setting and joined them.

“I couldn’t do anything else but come down,” he said.  Capt. Lewis said that he  would have been down sooner but he was working on a very important project in upstate New York against the gas companies on issues regarding fracking.

Although he was mostly complimentary toward the NYPD, he was very critical of the white shirts.  The way it is supposed to work is that the white shirts are supposed to be there to supervise–not to fight.  However, according to Capt. Lewis, he saw the white shirts fighting and not supervising.  ”When that happens, he said, “you have anarchy.” [And incidentally countless videos support what Captain Lewis was reporting about the involvement of the white shirts.]

Captain Lewis joined the Occupy Wall Street protesters fully dressed in his police uniform  He was arrested along with scores of other protesters. Once again, the point is proven that members of the Occupy groups are more more diverse and include Americans from all ages and all walks of life.  These people, like Captain Lewis, are attracted to the group because of the values that it represents.

Values such as have been demonstrated by the Occupy Dallas group.  When the City Manager, Mayor and City Council of Dallas ordered their dogs and horses to tear down the Occupy Dallas camp–home also to several homeless people–they didn’t bother to ask where these people might be spending the rest of the night.  They didn’t care, just as they obviously don’t seem to care that 192,000 children in the city of Dallas are living in poverty.  They must have lazy parents according to the values of the leadership of Dallas.

The 99% know better.  That is why, unlike the members of the Dallas city council, they took these people into their homes.  We stand for people values–not corporate values.   If corporations and the people who support Wall Street values were really people as in human beings, they would not turn their backs on 192,000 children living in poverty, nor would they destroy the only home and safe haven for another human being–just because they had the power to do so and it inconvenienced them by shining a light on their corrupt exclusive ideology.

I wonder if any of the members of the Dallas Mayor’s office are going to have the nerve to be seen serving turkey at some Thanksgiving charity the day before the holiday?  If they do, I hope that someone is there to call them out on their hypocrisy.

A peaceful Nicaraguan Election Brings a mandate for Sandinista Social programs

        November 18, 2011 in Community

Joy on Election Day November 10 Nicaragua

According to Nicaragua’s Supreme Electoral Council (CSE), between 78 and 80 percent of Nicaragua’s 3.3 million eligible voters participated in the November 6th election, re-electing Sandinista President Daniel Ortega with more than 62 percent of the vote and sending a Sandinista majority to the National Assembly. The most popular of the four opposition candidates, radio personality and former Contra supporter Fabio Gadea of the Independent Liberal Party Alliance (PLI) received just over 31 percent of the vote. In a country where many people have long associated Ortega with the civil war and economic suffering caused by U.S. policy toward Nicaragua in the 1980s, this result is a remarkable mandate for the President’s extensive social programs.

Vallejos Urbina lives in an informal squatter settlement without paved streets, sewers, and reliable water and electricity. The Sandinista government recently changed her family’s life, however, by giving the family a title to the land they live on, as the government will have done to 136,000 other Nicaraguan families by the end of 2011. The titles mean official integration into Nicaraguan public life and often lead to sewers, paved roads, and improved water and electric services.

The old conservative dogs in Congress better suck it up and get on the bus that is turning left before it leaves without them.

The same movie is being played all over the world and there are too many of us and our momentum is too great to stop. We will have justice and equality for all

2012 is the International Year of  Cooperatives.   A year sponsored by the United Nations. Perhaps people will learn that there are many business models that work better than Wall Street.

The UN’s goals for the IYC are to:

            • Increase public awareness about co-operatives and their contributions to socio-economic development and the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals.
            • Promote the formation and growth of co-operatives.
            • Encourage governments to establish policies, laws and regulations conducive to the formation, growth and stability of co-operatives.

EARLY VOTING IN TEXAS BEGINS MONDAY OCTOBER 24, 2011

I know, it’s not as glamorous as voting in a Presidential election, but your vote is important.  This season there are no less than 10 amendments to the Texas Constitution.

Proposition 1, The amendment authorizes the legislature to provide the surviving spouse of a 100 percent or totally disabled veteran with an exemption from ad valorem taxation of all or part of the market value of the surviving spouse’s residence homestead provided that certain conditions are met. - I am voting yes. If we can’t be kind to surviving spouses of a totally disabled veteran, then how can we even call ourselves human?

              Proposition 2,
The amendment authorizes the issuance of $6 BILLION in general obligation bonds for water projects. I am voting no as this violates my pay as you go principle.

              Proposition 3,
The amendment authorizes the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board or its successors to issue and sell general obligation bonds on a continuing basis for the purpose of financing educational loans for students. I‘m voting no.  I am all for supporting student loans but we should raise taxes to fund the loans. I’m fed up with hidden taxes. We need to get over our phobia of taxes–especially our taxes for the upper 5%.

              Proposition 4,
The amendment authorizes the legislature to permit a county to issue bonds or notes to finance the development or redevelopment of an unproductive, underdeveloped, or blighted area within the county, and to pledge increases in ad valorem tax revenues imposed on property in the area by the county for repayment of such bonds or notes.   I’m voting no.  This is a speculative bond. The county will only be able to repay what it borrows if the redevelopment increases the value of the property.  I’ve had more than enough of government officials and their Wall Street speculation with my tax money.

              Proposition 5,
This proposal allows cities and counties to enter into interlocal contracts with other cities and counties without having to assess an ad valorem tax and set aside a specified amount of funds for the payment of costs under the interlocal contract.  I’m voting no.  If you don’t have the money to cover the payment of costs then you shouldn’t enter into a contract.

              Proposition 6,
The amendment allows the Legislature to increase the amount of principal that is available for withdrawal from the permanent school fund each year and would also clarify certain references to that fund in the constitution. Increased access to the principal of the state public education trust fund would be based upon HJR 109 granting the authority to consider alternative market calculations when determining the amount of principal that is available for distribution to the available school fund. HJR 109 would also provide authority to distribute to the available school fund annual revenue from school fund land or other properties up to $300 million per year.  I’m voting hell no.  Are you kidding?  Voting on this one amendment should be enough to get anyone who has kids in public schools off the couch and to the polls.  You are going to trust Rick Perry after what he did with this “Texas Enterprise Fund”?  Hell no, stand up for school kids whose parents can’t afford private school. vote no.  Rob Orr a Republican Texas State Representative says that the Texas legislature won’t be able to touch the money but I don’t trust that one bit.

NOTE:   The Permanent School Fund (PSF) was established in the Texas Constitution of 1876, which set aside half of Texas’ remaining public lands to help finance public schools. Several different terms are used in the Constitution to refer to this fund, and Proposition 6 would replace other terms with the single term, “Permanent School Fund” in all references. (I’m all for that aspect as it clarifies meaning by using one term instead of many to refer to the same thing; however, the other part nullifies it for me and I’ll vote no.)

Furthermore, providing for this transfer of funds from a permanent trust for schools will deplete the funds for the future and contribute to the destabilization of public schools.

              Proposition 7,
.The amendment adds El Paso County to the list of counties authorized to create conservation and reclamation districts to develop parks and recreational facilities financed by taxes.  I‘m voting yes on this one.  Frankly I don’t even know why it is necessary.  Shouldn’t all counties have this privilege?  and if not, then why not?

              Proposition 8,
The amendment requires the legislature to provide for taxation of open space land devoted to water stewardship purposes on the basis of its productive capacity.    I’m voting no.  This is just another tax break for the rich.

              Proposition 9,
The amendment authorizes the governor, on the written recommendation and advice of the Board of Pardons and Paroles, to grant a pardon, reprieve, or commutation of punishment to a person who successfully completes a term of deferred adjudication community supervision.  I’m voting yes  This results in a more equitable policy on pardons and expunction of criminal records.  Even though charges are dismissed after successful adjudication, the criminal history remains and can be a barrier to obtaining employment, housing and even admission to schools.

              Proposition 10,
The amendment extends the length of the unexpired term that causes the automatic resignation of certain local elected officeholders if they announce candidacy or become candidates for another office from one year to one year and 30 days.  I’m voting no.  Candidates should not be allowed to hold elected district or county positions while running for other offices. That cheats the taxpayers.  It makes us essentially partner to their campaigns. No Way.  Further more, it just encourages the obnoxious tradition of professional politicians.
