Recall Walker Rally at Capitol Draws 25,000 to 30,000

Huge crowds show up Saturday as recall organizers announce they’ve collected more than 100,000 signatures on petitions.  “As of (Friday) night — the fourth day of signature collection, more than 105,000 Wisconsin residents have already signed their name to a petition to recall Scott Walker,” said Heather DuBois Bourenane, a volunteer withUnited Wisconsin, the group spearheading the recall effort. “Across the state, people are talking with their friends, family and neighbors about Walker’s destruction and are doing all they can to end his days as governor.”

Organizers need to collect 540,000 signatures by Jan. 17 to force a recall election.

Voter Suppression Tactic Reported in Wisconsin

    September 8, 2011 in Wisconsin

Reuters reports that a memo, provided to the press by Democratic State Senator Jon Erpenbach, is  likely to fan concerns among critics of the Republican-backed law that it aimed to suppress votes of thousands of otherwise eligible Wisconsin voters.

In the memo, a top aide in the state transportation department told staffers in the motor vehicle department, which is responsible for issuing the free IDs, to “refrain from offering” them to customers who do not specifically ask for them.

Scot Ross, the head of One Wisconsin Now, a group opposed to the voter ID law, called the memo “a smoking gun” that proved the measure was designed to disenfranchise the poor, students and minorities, who are less likely to have state-issued identification and more likely to vote for Democrats.

Ross said his group would file an open records request with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation to obtain “all communications and e-mails related to the issuance of state identification cards for the purposes of voting under the state’s voter identification bill.”

In case you don’t know, your state may also have passes voter ID laws–all of which are designed to disenfranchise voters.

Texas, Alabama, Kansas, South Carolina, Tennessee and Rhode Island are among states who have passed such laws.

Tea Party Koch-backed Americans for Prosperity attempt to suppress votes in Wisconsin

      August 4, 2011 in Wisconsin

Now that it looks like the Koch brothers will lose control of Wisconsin in the recall of Republican officials and thus their planned eventual takeover of the utilities in that state via a free gift from Scott Walker and his maniacal bunch of Republican thugs, Americans for Prosperity (AFP) (the Koch front group that has bankrolled the Tea Party movement) is so desperate that they have committed voter suppression.

Several source on the Internet including the Huffington Post and Politico report that the AFP are sending absentee ballot application forms out to Democratic voters with incorrect information on it.  The form instructs voters to mail the application back to the wrong address.

A copy of that absentee ballot that was sent out by Americans for Prosperity was obtained by Politico.

Lesson learned: Any information that you receive from Americans for Prosperity should be thrown in the trash.  I’ve been reporting on that group for three years.  They are horrible.  They may as well be named “The Koch Brothers Advertising Agency.”

This group was captured on video high-fiving one another and laughing when the news was announced that the USA lost the bid for the Olympics–a win that would have immediately infused about $4 billion into our economy and resulted in the immediate hiring of at least 4,000 workers.  These people are not for the prosperity of all Americans–just that of the Koch Brothers and other billionaires and millionaires.  They are despicable kochroaches.

Phillips has a long career as a conservative operative

Timothy R. (Tim) Phillips is the president of Americans for Prosperity and the Americans for Prosperity Foundation. He became president in 2006. He was formerly Vice President of Century Strategies, a political and corporate consulting firm. Tim Phillips is in fact Right-Wing Operative. Before replacing Koch Industries lobbyist Nancy Pfotenhauer as president of Americans for Prosperity, Timothy R. Phillips had a long career as a conservative operative. In 1992, Phillips managed Rep. Bob Goodlatte’s (R-VA) first Congressional campaign and served as his chief of staff for four years.

Connections with Ralph Reed and sleazy ad campaigns

In 1997, Phillips co-founded public relations firm Century Strategies with Ralph Reed . There, Phillips oversaw “direct mail, telemarketing, coalition building and strategic services” for the 2000 and 2004 Bush for President campaigns, and specialized in “grasstops” operations to establish fake grassroots organizations. Among their “triumphs” was the 2002 smear campaign of Max Cleland. Tim Phillips was behind the 2002 TV ad for Saxby Chambliss that falsely portrayed his opponent Max Cleland a Vietnam vet with no legs and one arm as “not having the courage to lead.”

Connections to Jack Abramoff and Abuse of Chinese Workers
In 1998, now disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff hired Phillips’ firm to pressure members of Congress to vote against legislation that would have made the U.S. commonwealth of Northern Mariana Islands subject to federal wage and worker safety laws.

A federal report “found that Chinese women were subject to forced abortions and that women and children were subject to forced prostitution in the local sex-tourism industry.”Nonetheless, Phillips sent out mailers claiming Chinese workers “are exposed to the teachings of Jesus Christ” while on the islands, and many “are converted to the Christian faith and return to China with Bibles in hand.” The mailers then encouraged the recipients to contact lawmakers and ask them to oppose the Marianas labor reform legislation.

The Marianas stealth lobbying effort was not the only time Phillips worked with Abramoff. Reed and Phillips conspired to generate conservative Christian outrage towards gambling at Indian casinos in a cynical plot to encourage those same tribes to hire Abramoff to lobby on their behalf. While Phillips and Reed postured to be motivated by anti-gambling Christian values, the pair are alleged to  have helped launder lobbying money from an Abramoff Internet gambling client called eLottery.

WISCONSIN: Democrats there compare Wisconsin to DC

        July 24, 2011 in Wisconsin

The Washington Post reports that for the 60 or so Democrats crammed into a chocolate shop Saturday morning to rally around a local legislative candidate, the standoff in Washington over raising the debt ceiling feels all too familiar.

Wisconsin Republicans, these Democrats say, broke a cardinal rule of state politics during a dramatic budget standoff last winter: They refused to compromise. The similarities are abundant, these Democrats say, to what’s happening in Washington.MORE

WISCONSIN: Walker admits a mistake while patting himself on the back

          July 17, 2011 in Wisconsin

The Whole Truth–the part we didn’t hear. iflizwerequeen graphic

Reuters reports that Walker admits he made a mistake.

“The mistake I made early on is, I looked at it almost like the head of a small business: identify a problem, identify a solution and go out and do it,” Walker told Reuters at the National Governor’s Association meeting in Salt Lake City.

“I don’t think we built enough of a political case, so we let … the national organizations come in and define the debate while we were busy just getting the job done,” he said.

“The head of a small business”? You notice he didn’t use the analogy of “like the CEO of a large corporation.”  You know, the kind that sell out Main Street to Wall Street with their privatization schemes.

“Busy getting the job done”? Yes, Walker was “busy getting the job done”. He and his Republican pals were busy seeing that government is dismantled, workers disenfranchised, and plowing the ground for the privatization of Companies like Koch Industries to take over, raise prices and pollute Wisconsin. Mr. Walker and his pals, as well as some Democrats like Bill Clinton (who was commended by the Heritage Foundation for his privatization efforts when he was president) need to read about the conclusion of Société Générale S.A. (a large European Bank and a major Financial Services company which also has a substantial global presence).

They recently pointed out that privatizations are not likely to cure European state solvency. (and you can add local, state and national solvencies of the USA as well to that assessment.)

The value of a business is the discounted sum of all its future cash flows. Thus, when nations, states and local governments sell off their assets to private companies, they lose access to those cash flows which could have been used to service the debts.

The seller [the local, state or national government] might get a boost to their solvency if the buyer overpays. However, in today’s markets for cashing in the assets owned by the people, it is more likely that buyers will underpay–not overpay. Besides, pray tell, when was the last time that someone from the financial industry overpaid you?  Another broken free market model: Why privatization won’t work.

WISCONSIN: The Beginning of an American Spring?

            July 13, 2011 in Wisconsin

or just another unpredictable spring day?

The Chicago Tribune reports that the Wisconsin Democrats did not get faked out in the first four election in Wisconsin.   All six Democrats prevailed in primary races on Tuesday against candidates put on the ballot by the Republican Party. Those fake Democrats ran in order to delay the general election for the incumbents until Aug. 9.  MORE

            _______________________________________

This is a resounding win for the people, for the 80% majority, for those who earn less than $100,000 a year.  It should be a loud and clear message to the leaders of the Democratic Party and the Obama/Clinton  Administration.  Although they are not likely to pay much attention to that message, that won’t stop them from  piggy-backing on this victory as if they led the charge.

I hope that the progressive Democrats don’t lose sight of what happened in Wisconsin during the protests earlier this year.  The protests against the Republican assault on the working people of Wisconsin got ZERO support from the White House and the leadership of the Democratic Party in the early stages of this citizen uprising.

I hope that the progressive Democrats remember that Barack Obama never even sent a representative to these protests. Instead, he stood back as he usually does like butter won’t melt in his mouth saying nothing to support the majority.  Then near the end of it all when it was obvious that the people were going to win and would have their recall election, the White House sponsored an online conference with Biden and Hilda Solis, the Secretary labor.  He also spoke in favor of workers at a February 28 bipartisan conference of Governors.  [But let's remember that was February 28, the same day that 100,000 protesters against Scott Walker jammed the capitol of Wisconsin.]

Although the White House and the leadership of the Democratic Party will benefit from this win, we need to remember that they had NOTHING to do with it.  It was the people and the Unions who forged this victory.

I read elsewhere that money is pouring into Wisconsin from the Unions and progressive organizations.  For example, Democracy for America, a Vermont progressive organization, has announced that it will pour in an unprecedented $1.5 million into these recall races, which normally have cumulative budgets of a few hundred thousand.  According to the MacIver Institute, the AFL-CIO has sent over $3.8 million to the “We Are Wisconsin” Super-Pac since May, including over $750,000 since the start of July. In the last two months, the public sector union collective AFSCME has sent over $1.8 million in the last two months, including $800,000 on July 7 alone.

            ________________________________________________

Remembering the history of President Obama’s support of workers correctly: Political expediency is not to be confused with standing up for the majority.

Back on February 18, four days into the demonstrations which had begun on February 14, Obama gave an interview to a Milwaukee television station.  The first question was about his reaction to Walker’s actions in pushing through legislation to eliminate collective bargaining rights for most public employees.

“Everybody’s got to make some adjustments to new fiscal realities,” he began, endorsing the basic falsification employed by Democratic and Republican politicians alike to justify cuts in public employee wages and benefits.”

If this is “support” for workers, Obama needs to move over as he is standing in our light.  The leadership of the Democratic Party and Obama did not get on the bandwagon of the recall efforts until it became apparent that the bus was leaving without them.

As the demonstrations progressed and it became more than apparent that the people of Wisconsin were mad as hell and were doing something about it, Obama’s remarks began to change in tone. For example, despite an order from Governor Scott Walker for protesters to leave the capital building no later than 4 p.m. on February 27, police refused to forcibly remove protesters and the demonstration entered its fifteenth day on the 28th of February. The size of the demonstration doubled within a week (From Feb 19 to Feb. 26)  from 50,000 to 100,000. On Saturday, February 26th, over 100,000 protesters rallied against the bill in Madison, which was the largest state rally since the Vietnam War.

Two days after 100,000 people demonstrated, the Milwaukee Area Labor Council posted a blog titled:  “Obama has hardly been silent about Wisconsin Protests”

The article says that it is false to say that Obama has been silent.  However, according to my opinion, if you look at the timeline of Obama’s comments, you will see that they became strongly pro only after it became apparent that there was a huge and unexpected groundswell for the people.  The article mentions as “proof” Obama’s comments at the bipartisan gathering of the nation’s governors in D.C. the last weekend in February which were pro-union.  Well duh–he made those comments on the same day Feb 28 that 100,000 citizens were marching  against the Governor of Wisconsin.

WISCONSIN: Low turnout and more Republican Voter Fraud

              July 12, 2011 in Wisconsin

Reuters reports today that the turnout which was expected to be low is lower today.  Today’s elections are Democratic primaries that are held in six Republican held state Senate districts.

The Democrats running in the primary are opposed by six Republicans who are running as Democrats. Under Wisconsin law it is legal. Republicans are posing as Democrats to force the Democrats to hold primary elections and give the incumbents Republicans more time to campaign and raise money. The final recall elections will be in August.

Wisconsin has open primaries and no official party registration. So Republicans can run as Democrats and vote in Democratic primaries and vice versa for Democrats.

Expect a lot more of this type of voter fraud in 2012 and yes it is nothing but voter fraud.  If a voter is tricked into voting for a Republican who is posing as a Democrat, that is fraud.  I don’t give a damn if it is “legal” or not.  It is wrong and everyone knows that.  And these are the people who raised hell about ACORN–a nonprofit organization whose only crime was to empower the poor by educating them and registering them to vote.

My fear is that people are getting so worn out with the games and fraud play against them by our elected officials that they will just give up and stop even bothering to go to the polls.

If that happens, we all lose and only the few, those in the upper 5% will win.  People in the upper 1% like the Koch brothers will soar.

                    WISCONSIN: Invaded by stink bug

                    July 10, 2011 in Wisconsin

All stink bugs are shaped like a shield.

The Brown Marmorated Stink Bug, BMSB, having accidently been introduced to the United States in the late 1990s, is a relatively new insect to the USA. It hitched a ride in packing material from its Asian habitat and was first identified in 1998, in Allentown, Pennsylvania. The destructive insect has since spread throughout neighboring states, where it can be expected to proliferate and continue to cause damage.

The Chicago Tribune reports that this Asian species of stink bug has been spotted in Wisconsin, Minnesota and Illinois and researchers say it’s a matter of time before breeding populations start moving in. UW entomologist Eileen Cullen tells The Janesville Gazette (http://bit.ly/pQZQ1S ) the bugs insert a needle-like probe into the fruit of seed pods and suck the juices.

Phil Pellitteri, an insert expert at the University of Wisconsin Extension, says the new species called the brown marmorated stink bug is coming from the East Coast and they will eventually affect farmers’ profits.
