Another Bizarre and Under-Reported Story in USA Mainstream Media

July 31, 2011 in Mainstream Media

Sources for story:  NOT the New  York Times;  NOT the Washington Post;  NOT Fox News;  NOT MSNBC.   Instead:  The Guardian UK; Narco News; The Smirking Chimp; Democracy Now

A Mexican activist, mathematician and writer claims she has fallen foul of a US blacklist after a plane on which she was a passenger was denied access to American air space.

Raquel Gutiérrez Aguilar, a Mexican citizen, had been on her way from Mexico City to Italy via Spain for a conference last week when her flight was turned back. She believes it was because of charges against her in Bolivia two decades ago involving a revolutionary group, the Tupac Katari Guerrilla Army. She was arrested at the time but the charges were later dropped.  Her former husband, Álvaro García Linera, now vice-president of Bolivia, was also arrested and the charges dropped.

The US maintains a blacklist of thousands of people not permitted either entry to the country or to be aboard a plane using its air space. The list, created after the 9/11 attacks, has been criticised by US civil rights groups who say it is too broad and those on it have no chance to challenge their inclusion.

The plane had to turn back to Mexico after 90 minutes. Gutiérrez, 48, was forced to leave the flight, which then resumed its journey to Spain. Almost all flights from Mexico to Europe cross US air space.

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) agency and other USA government agencies won’t say why Gutiérrez Aguilar, an internationally respected author and analyst of social movements, was stopped mid-flight and barred from crossing into US airspace.

Once again, if you want the news that matters to  your life, don’t look for it in USA mainstream media because you are not likely to find it there.  The only way that stories like the one above do eventually make it to mainstream USA media is if the story garners extensive international attention.  Then and only then will we see it in mainstream USA media.

Why is this story important?  It provides an insight into the extent of the extreme right-wing censorship that is in effect in the USA.

Side-Show-Bob Chris Wallace gives Bachmann’s Campaign a Boost

June 27, 2011 in Mainstream Media, Media

    Drawing from Library of Congress

From the Mainstream Media Sideshow:  On Sunday, Fox News Host Chris Wallace asked Republican Presidential hopeful Michele Bachman if she is a “flake.”

Politico reported this morning that Bachmann is not accepting Chris Wallace’s apology. Apparently a lot of women wrote into Fox News that they were disgusted with Chris Wallace’s question.  Politico is of the opinion that this will boost Bachmann’s appeal to women voters.

    _______________________________________________________

    IFLIZWEREQUEEN COMMENTS

Some one should ask Chris Wallace if HE is a flake.  His pseudo question is typical of mainstream media and it is not limited to Fox News.  What did he think?–that Bachmann would answer:  ”Yes, Mr. Wallace, I am a flake. Thank you for asking. Next intelligent question.”

What did Wallace hope to accomplish with such a question other than to insult the person he is interviewing?  Or perhaps to prove to his audience that he did not approve of Bachmann.

I’m no fan of Bachmann’s politics, but I’m even less a fan of Chris Wallace’s style of interviewing–especially women.

This is just another example of the level of punditry on mainstream media and the real purpose of the stable of media pundits (regardless the channel) which is NOT to conduct serious discussions about serious issues, but rather to entertain by asking “naughty” questions, by delving into the personal quirks of candidates and by provoking them with inane questions.

    ________________________________________________________

How sophisticated are they with their propaganda?

I don’t think so, but underestimating the intelligence of your opponent is one sure way to lose.  Consider this possibility:  Could Chris Wallace’s question have been intentional and designed to increase the sympathy of women voters for Michele Bachmann?  Many women at least one time in their lives, regardless their serious nature, have been dismissed as flakes, airheads, or “not understanding”, etc.

Regarding Anthony Weiner Penis Photo Comment by Barbara Walters

June 10, 2011 in Mainstream Media

Huffington Post even featured a video of Barbara Walters commenting on Weinergate.  The titillating headlines read:  Anthony Weiner Penis Photo Impresses Barbara Walters (Video).

The lead sentence reads:  ”This is, without a doubt, the best television moment of the day.”

      IFLIZWEREQUEEN RESPONSE

Sad, that your opening statement is highly likely true–that the best television moment of the day is Babs commenting in the size of a man’s penis.

Sad, also, to say that this is the best that AOL Huff Post can do in terms of reporting news that makes a difference in the lives of Americans.

Tell me: What does the size of Weiner’s weine or the relevance of Barbara Walters comments have to do with job creation or health care or any other topic that actually makes a difference in the lives of Americans?

Keep it up AOL/Huff Post, you may edge Fox News out of its #1 position of Propaganda designed to titillate and distract the American people from issues that make a difference in the lives of Americans.

New York Times needs to remember its own propaganda

April 8, 2011 in Mainstream Media, Propaganda

FAIR points out the NYT Calls for protecting Libyan Civilian by Escalating War–Like they did in Fallujah.

An editorial page in today’s New York Times [the "liberal" paper] suggests using the American A-10 and AC-130 aircraft which are, according to the Times, “ideally suited for carefully sorting out targets in populated areas.”

F.A.I.R. points out the inconvenient history of the Times reporting on this aircraft.  They actually had the nerve to bring up a story from November 16, 2004. It seems that the Time had reported that.

In April, American troops were closing in on the city center when popular uprisings broke out in cities across Iraq. The outrage, fed by mostly unconfirmed reports of large civilian casualties, forced the Americans to withdraw. American commanders regarded the reports as inflated, but it was impossible to determine independently how many civilians had been killed.

Another article in the Times the following day included an iteration of “unconfirmed deaths of civilians.”

There was nothing “unconfirmed” about the civilian deaths.

The head of Fallujah’s hospital, Dr. Rafie al-Issawi, has consistently maintained that more than 600 people were killed in the initial U.S. siege of Fallujah in April 2004, a figure that rose to more than 800 as the siege was lifted and people pinned down by the fighting were able to register their families’ deaths (Knight-Ridder, 5/9/04). More than 300 of the dead, according to al-Issawi, were women and children. On October 26, the independent British-based group Iraq Body Count reported that the civilian death toll in Fallujah in April was about 600, based on their extensive evaluation of the numbers reported by local hospital officials and the Health Ministry, as well as mainstream media accounts.

          QUEEN’S COMMENTS

What continues to puzzle me is how ANY corporate owned mainstream media can ever be referred to as “liberal” is beyond me.  The only explanation is that such a lack of understanding can only be due to sheer ignorance. or perhaps relativity when one compares papers like the times to Republican mouthpieces like Fox News.

Bill Keller, age 63, executive Editor of The New York Times. Anyone who thinks that Keller is a “liberal” has more than one screw loose.

Keller is the son of former chairman and chief executive of the Chevron Corporation. Keller was one of the leading “liberal” supporters of the 2003 invasion of Iraq, explaining his backing for military action in his article ‘ The I-Can’t-Believe-I’m-A-Hawk Club’. Two days after the invasion, Keller wrote the column ‘Why Colin Powell Should Go’ arguing for US Secretary of State’s resignation because his strategy of diplomacy at the UN had failed. In contrast, Keller was much more sympathetic to Deputy Defence Secretary Paul Wolfowitz, describing him as the ‘Sunshine Warrior’. It’s a toss-up as to which one Bill Keller disapproves of the most: Arianna Huffington or Julian Assange. I’m not sure what Keller is, but I’m fairly certain that it’s not a liberal.

Radioactive does not mean toxic.  In fact, nuclear physicist and medical expert Ann Coulter has declared that radiation is good for you.

Other experts reassure us as well.  For example, Dr. Jonathan LaPook, M.D. the medical correspondent for the CBS Evening News said:  “But as radiation expert Dr. Donald Bucklin told me today, these instruments “can measure miniscule changes in radiation” that have “absolutely no effect on human beings.” In fact, according to the diplomat, initial readings were not dangerous in any way — “about a billion times beneath levels that would be health threatening.”   SOURCE

QUEEN’S INTERJECTION: Wait a damn minute.  Who is this Dr. Donald Bucklin anyway?  First he is referred to as a “radiation expert” then in the very next sentence he is called a “diplomat.”   Are we being punked by CBS?

You tell ME!  I Googled Dr. Donald Bucklin and I didn’t find any “radiation expert.”   I found Dr. Donald Leroy Bucklin MD who practices occupational medicine in Paradise Valley, Arizona, Phoenix, Arizona and Scottsdale, Arizona. Dr. Bucklin graduated with an MD 29 years ago–no mention of his being a “radiation expert.”

I also found a Donald T. Bucklin who is a trial lawyer who represents white collar criminals.  But I found no Dr. Donald Bucklin who is a “radiation expert.”

I don’t know.  It’s told that sex sells, but still it’s a bit cheesy for the home page which would be the equivalent to the front page of a newspaper.  I guess that’s what happens when you join the mainstream media bunch.

Still you have to hand it to Adriana Huffington.  She made over $300 million on the AOL merger of her online media outlet–an empire built largely by unpaid labor.  She did achieve the ultimate capitalist dream: of having a factory run almost entirely by unpaid labor.

A different perspective on the Jordan Revolution from Wall Street

March 25, 2011 in Class War, Mainstream Media, Media, Middle East

                  A lesson in propaganda.

Americans really need to raise their awareness of how stories are presented to them by various media outlets.

Consider the reporting on the riots in Jordan.

The Christian Science Monitor article regarding the revolt taking place in Jordon depicts it as the rulers using unnecessary brute force against the people.

But if you read a report of it in the Wall Street Journal , you will read copy that depicts the uprising as one that is civilized and ordinary.

Separately, in Jordan, police fired water cannon to disperse crowds after about 200 government loyalists started hurling stones at thousands of opposition protesters camped in a central square of the capital, Amman.

Jordan’s opposition is demanding electoral changes that would see the prime minister directly elected and give more powers to parliament. The protests have been largely peaceful and on a smaller scale than others in the region. Rather than seeking the downfall of the monarchy, many activists have urged the king to take charge of political reforms.

                  ********************************************************************************

                  QUEEN’S ANALYSIS

LOL  Notice that that the Wall Street Journal refer to the rock throwers as “government loyalists”–as if they are normal,  ordinary citizens who are loyal to the monarchy.

Now read this report from The Christian Science Monitor

This afternoon, police shut down a major protest camp in Amman, using water cannons. Mubarak-style thugs, widely believed to be hired by the regime, attacked the protesters with sticks and stones. Local news sources are reporting one death and nearly 100 injured.

                  ********************************************************************************

As you can see, the report from the Christian Science Monitor presents a much different tone to the Revolution. I’m inclined to go with the Christian Science Monitor’s version simply because government loyalists to the monarchy consider themselves above the rabble.  It is not their nature to be hurling stones at others.  These are the kinds of people who hire others to do it for them.  It’s a human nature thing.  Fighting is ugly.  The rich have an inclination to hire others to perform any unpleasant task. Only a few really enjoy it and believe me there are not many to be found among the Lord Fauntleroy wealthy. You have to be poor and hungry to soldier a rich man’s war–which is what they all are.

MAKE KNOWING THE REAL  TRUTH A HABIT

Friday afternoon and evening is the time that corporate mainstream media release news that they don’t want the American people to realize has happened.

To keep yourself in the loop, pay particular attention to the news released on Friday evening and through the weekend up to Sunday night.

Also don’t just go to one news outlet for your information.  To get a balanced perspective, I recommend reading at least 10 sources.  Make two of them sources that represent viewpoints and interests that you disagree with and be sure to include at least three foreign news media outlets.

Using the Internet, takes less time than you might think.  For example, on any given day I read from at least 30 different sources.  One of the reasons why I created this site in the first place was for my own benefit.  It makes is easy for me to search through various sources quickly.  If you look at the right column you will see many links to sources.  Feel free to come here and use them to further your own knowledge of what is really happening in the world.

The better informed we are, the better citizens we are of our community, state, nation and world.

                    QUEEN’S ADDENDUM

I decided that I will run this same post every Friday from now on.  This is a habit that has become ingrained in me over the past three years.  Some wise person once said:  “We make our habits and then our habits make us.”  It’s so true.  When I was reminded again of this propaganda technique for burying important news about three years ago (after first hearing of it years ago in a journalism class) I began to practice paying attention to the weekend news and it’s true.

Now I find that my antenna for detecting these important stories get a little longer on the weekends.  Already, even this morning, I can feel them beginning to extend.
