YEA! VERMONT PASSES SINGLE PAYER HEALTH CARE BILL

May 26, 2011 in Single Payer

BRATTLEBORO, Vermont — Vermont became the first state to lay the groundwork for single-payer health care on Thursday when its governor signed an ambitious bill aimed at establishing universal insurance coverage for all residents.

MAY 26, 2011 Screen Capture of Survey

I’ve been keeping this survey for a year and a half.  The largest percentage ever for status quo has been 21% .  Single payer has always been the first choice by a long shot since day one; public option second and status quo or do nothing for health care last.

    Update on opinions of one of my favorite truth-tellers: Matt Taibbi

    March 4, 2011 in Bailout, Banks, Class War, Single Payer

    FROM THE ROLLING STORE–One of the greatest sources for an explanation of what’s really happening.  [Ironic, isn't it that source such as music review journal like Rolling Stone and a cable comedy show like The Daily Show with Jon Stewart are better sources for reliable news and opinions of what is happening in Washington DC than our mainstream media.]

    On Rajat Gupta - Does this really mean that the SEC is serious about punishing the guilty?  Not necessarily.

    “.  . ..All the big banks were trading massively on inside information about bailouts, interest rate changes, and announcements about government programs like the PPIP and the TALF. In a way, the whole rearranging of the economy behind closed doors — the backroom deals in which companies like Merrill and AIG and Bear and Washington Mutual and so on were wedded to buyers in taxpayer-aided shotgun weddings –  this was all one giant insider trade. Clearly there were individuals who knew about these deals and acted on them before the rest of the world’s investors did. If you look at it like that, one lonely Rajat Gupta isn’t going to cut it, I don’t think.” [And I don't either, Matt.]

    The Barackster and Griftopia

    Matt reports on Tom Campbell, a member of the board of directors of the American Booksellers Association who, with others, meet with the president in January of this year to bring him books to become part of the White House permanent library: Tom was the last person to hand him my book. “I figured somebody had to bring a political book” I said as I handed him a copy of Matt Taibbi’s “Griftopia,” a jaundiced, startling view of the financial meltdown. “Oh I know who Matt Taibbi is,” Obama said. “He sometimes doesn’t have a very high opinion of me.” As if to prove his point, he opened the book to an early page and read aloud the chapter heading, “The Biggest A**hole in the Universe,” a portrait of Alan Greenspan. “He’s not talking about you there,” I joked, giving him a pat on the shoulder.”

    [By the way if you haven't read Griftopia, I recommend it.  After you read it you will never view Greenspan in the same light as before and you are certain to understand bubble economics much better.]

    QUEEN’S NOTES

    In case you don’t keep up with Wall Street (I know it’s not easy.) On monday the SEC charged Rajat Gupta, a former Goldman and Procter & Gamble director with illegally tipping Galleon Management hedge fund guru Raj Rajaratnam with inside information that later translated into millions in profitable trades.

    According to the SEC, Gupta had a long history of immediately dialing Rajaratnam with insider information even before the ink was dry on the board minutes. In fact, as the former head of management consulting firm McKinsey & Co., Gupta was one of the most efficient inside traders in history.

    For example, the SEC alleges that Gupta took part in a special meeting of the Goldman Sachs board during the height of the 2008 financial crisis that considered, and eventually won, a $5 billion equity injection by Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway

      IT’S GOING TO TAKE A LOT MORE EFFORT THAN CIVILITY

      January 13, 2011 in Class War, Conservative Nonsense, Single Payer

      The rest of us:  THE MAJORITY need to remember that we ARE THE MAJORITY–NOT THEM!

      Huffington Post reported that Mark DeMoss, director of the Civility Project, a two-year-old effort launched at the beginning of the Obama presidency to prompt legislators across the nation to cool political rhetoric, decided to shut the campaign down earlier this month — even before the latest resurgence of debate about “vitriol” and rhetoric sparked by the events in Arizona over the weekend. {Yes, it would be enlightening to see what the “interest” is in civility after the murders of Arizona but I doubt that it will be much different.  The physical aggression of Tea Party candidates and their followers wielded against their winning opponents in November should have been more than enough to have convinced DeMoss and other Republicans of the value of civility. ] DeMoss, an evangelical conservative with ties to some big-name Republicans, cited a general lack of interest, as well as pervading signs that the nature of political discourse appeared only to be deteriorating during Obama’s first two years as president, as justifications for halting his program.

      ***********************************************************************

      QUEENS COMMENTS

      Yes civility is a step in the right direction.  But don’t expect much civility to be forthcoming from the Tea Party and most of the Republicans because lack of civility and physical and verbal intimidation are part of their political strategies.

      Instead of discussing the issues and coming up with ANY solution beyond tax cuts for the rich and “tort reform” [another name for removing citizen’s right to the judicial arm of our government}.   If these people get their way in regard to tort reform, for example, Wall Street Corporate arbitrators would replace our judicial system for ALL cases–even including horrible cases involving criminal violence against others.  Specific example:  No less than 30 Republican Senators last October (2010) had no issues will allowing Halliburton arbitrators to settle a gang rape case of a young woman named Jamie Leigh Jones.  To their credit not a single female Republican senator voted against Senator Al Franken’s amendment to prohibit US Contractors from requiring their employees to sign arbitration agreements as a requirement for hire.

      1.  STEP ONE:  DON’T EXPECT TEA PARTY AND MOST REPUBLICANS TO TONE DOWN THEIR RHETORIC BECAUSE NAME CALLING HAS BEEN A WINNING POLITICAL STRATEGY FOR THEM. Lack of civility and attacking their opponent’s character instead of their ideas and solutions is basic to their strategy and their appeal to the fringe elements of society.   This is not new.  Such tactics have been central to the conservatives for at least 20 years. Look what they did to Clinton.  At least the last four years of his presidency the Republicans in Congress did little more than attack Clinton’s character.  They wasted time and millions of taxpayer dollars with their lawsuits and attacks on Clinton’s character.

      There is a title for this type of propaganda strategy and it is called Ad hominem.  Ad hominem is a Latin phrase that has come to mean attacking one’s opponent as opposed to attaching their arguments.  One example of attacking the person instead of their arguments is the campaign against Senator Kerry that was launched by Swift Boat Veterans for Truth in the 2004 Presidential campaign.  Often these hate campaigns are bankrolled by the very rich–people such as Bob Perry of Houston, and the Charles and David Koch who bankroll groups like “Americans for Prosperity” who have poured millions of dollars into supporting Tea Party activists.  There is the element of the class war–the rich against the majority in all of this.

      2. STEP TWO:  MANY OF THESE PEOPLE ARE BULLIES.  YES, BULLIES.  i INCLUDE GLENN BECK, SHARRON ANGLE, SARAH PALIN, ALONG WITH THEIR WALL STREET BANK ROLLERS.

      This makes dealing with them especially difficult.  I suggest that those who want to make change read books and other information that teach people how to effectively deal with bully behavior.  i am totally serious about this.

      3.  STEP THREE: LEARN HOW TO RECOGNIZE PROPAGANDA STRATEGIES AND CALL PEOPLE OUT ON IT WHEN YOU SEE THEM DEPLOYING SUCH STRATEGIES. As I’ve mentioned before, I am releasing a book on political propaganda strategies on February 14 that I will make available for digital download.  I am heartened to see than many Americans are already beginning to call some of the Tea Party members and Republicans out on their tactics.  The most recent example is calling out Sarah Palin on her use of the term “blood libel”.

      CONFRONT THEM WITH FACTS ABOUT THEIR INFLAMMATORY RHETORIC and inaccurate and juvenile name-calling .  This would be especially helpful if more members of congress did this. For example, the title that Eric Cantor gave to H.R. 2:  Repealing the Job Killing Health Care Act.  This is nothing but pure propaganda and irresponsible name-calling to start the myth that the Health Care bill will cost jobs.  Just one way to get Americans riled up to think the health care bill will kill jobs.  When Americans hear such rhetoric coming out of the mouths of Republicans, they need to check the facts.  For example, experts predict that the health care law will have little effect on employment.

      Thus for Cantor to have title the bill as such is dishonest. AND he should be condemned for it. He knew exactly what he was doing when he did this. This is wrong.  People that do things like this in Congress should be shunned.

      4.  STEP FOUR: Again, we come back to the issue of voting as many millionaires out of Congress as possible. We do not have a Congress that is representative of the demographics of the USA.  We have 261 millionaires in Congress–almost half of our Congress.  These people have huge Wall Street investments and portfolios.  Clearly their votes often represent a conflict of interests.  To expect these people to be altruistic and vote against their own self-interests 100% of the time in cases when the vote for their interests vs. those of the majority are in play is absurd.  It won’t and it does not happen.  Yes, we have to be careful going down this path because the rich will bankroll people like Christine O’Donnell and other citizens that they can then manipulate once they are in office. This means that ordinary people like you are going to have to run for office–people who really do believe in the political discourse and representation of the majority.  People who are intelligent and who can talk intelligently about issues.

        Last month Tom Delay was convicted by a Texas jury for conspiracy and money laundering for funneling money to GOP races through his political committee.  He is facing a sentence of up to life in prison at his sentencing in January.  Last week Velvet Revolution sent a letter to the sentencing judge urging him to impose a long prison term not only to punish Delay for a decades long career of unethical and illegal conduct but also to send a strong message to others such as Karl Rove and Tome Donohue, that illegally using corporate money to manipulate elections will not just result in a slap on the wrist.

        Next week Baltimore State’s Attorney General will be sworn into office and members of the Velvet Revolution  will meet with him to deliver thousands of signature on a letter requesting that he make a top priority of indicting Andrew Breitbart, James O’Keefe and Hanna Giles for illegally recording conversations of two Baltimore ACORN employees.  If you have not signed their letter, please do so here. I will let you know how the meeting goes.

        QUEEN’S ADDITIONAL COMMENTS ON THE VIGILANTE MODE OF THE MILLIONAIRE HOUSE AND SENATE

        By the way, while  you are at it, check out your congressperson’s vote on the bill to defund ACORN and if they voted to defund ACORN on this trumped up evidence by right-wing operatives,write to them and demand that they apologize to ACORN for jumping the gun and defunding ACORN on the flimsy evidence of a known right-wing operative like James O’Keefe.

        Most of the the Senate and the House should be ashamed of themselves for this vote.  ONLY 7 SENATORS STOOD UP TO THE TRAVESTY OF DEFUNDING ACORN–A GROUP WHOSE ONLY CRIME WAS TO EMPOWER THE POOR BY REGISTERING THEM TO VOTE.

        In the House, the Representatives voted 345 to 75 to defund ACORN.

        The nay votes in the Senate ran strictly down party lines. The 7 negative votes cast against Senate Amendment 2355 to H.R. 3288, which would have prohibited the use of funds to fund ACORN, were cast by 6 Democrats and 1 Independent. No Republicans voted against the Amendment. Those voting nay on this Amendment were:

        Burris (D) from Illinois;
        Casey (D) from Pennsylvania;
        Durbin (D) from Illinois;
        Gillibrand (D) from New York;
        Leahy (D) from Vermont;
        Sanders (I) from Vermont; and
        Whitehouse (D) from Rhode Island.

        WAKE UP FOLKS AND START REGISTERING PEOPLE TO VOTE YOURSELF!  The millionaires in the Senate and House don’t want the majority represented.

        QUEEN’S NOTE ON RECENT VICTORY FOR ACORN

        The Washington Examiner reports that:
        “Last Thursday [Dec 23] was a confusing day at the House Financial Services Committee. The committee was preparing to vote on legislation to create a new Consumer Financial Protection Agency when a fight erupted over ACORN, the community organizing group that was defunded by Congress after videos surfaced showing ACORN workers involved in a variety of corrupt practices.

        Although the proposed Consumer Financial Protection Agency — designed to deal with issues like mortgages and credit-card fees — has nothing to do with community organizing, Democrats offered an amendment that could allow ACORN and groups like it to participate in the new agency. Republicans offered an amendment of their own, designed to stop the Democratic one. An argument ensued. It was complicated, with lots of different proposals and a good bit of misunderstanding. But when the dust settled, Democrats had outmaneuvered Republicans, and the new bill they approved could allow organizations like ACORN to play a role in the highest levels of the new consumer protection agency.”

            What do the majority of Americans want for health care reform? SINGLE PAYER

            Photobucket

            Screen Shot taken December 16, 2009

            THAT IS RIGHT  SINGLE PAYER.

            Unlike President Obama, the Republicans, Joe Lieberman, Max Baucus, Rahm Emanuel, Eric Cantor, and all the other corporate shills, in September I created a poll that INCLUDED single pay as one of the three choices for health care reform.  The only reason that Obama and the other corporate shills took single pay off the table is because they know damn well that it is the best solution for health care reform.

            AND NO, SINGLE PAYER IS NOT WHAT MEDICARE IS.  NO, SINGLE PAYER IS NOT WHAT ENGLAND HAS.  Single payer is what France has–along with the ranking of #1 in the world for health care for their citizens.

            THE CONSISTENT RESULT OVER THE PAST FOUR MONTHS HAS BEEN THAT SINGLE PAYER HAS BEEN OVERWHELMINGLY IN THE LEAD OVER BOTH OF THE OTHER TWO CHOICES.

            That’s correct. For four months the profile of the graph has looked just like the screen shot that I took this morning.

              Guess what? Medicare is not free for Seniors. Medicare is NOT single payer.

              December 11, 2009 in Health, Healthcare, Single Payer

              I think a there are a lot of people out there like me who misunderstand exactly what Medicare is and what is really covered.

              Until I read into it recently, I thought that Medicare was like a single payer system that they have in Europe–Well it is not.

              First of all, you will pay $96.00 to $110.00 each month out of your measly social security check.

              BUT your payouts don’t stop there.

              If you are hospitalized, Medicare pays for everything EXCEPT 20% of your hospital bill.  Twenty percent of a hospital bill is a lot of money on a fixed income. For example, if  you’ve been in the hospital for 20 days at the rate o $400 a day, you will owe $1,600 out of your pocket.

              But it doesn’t stop there.  Every time you visit the doctor, you will pay 20% of whatever the visit cost.

              Medicare is NOT free.

              Additionally, many medications are not covered under Medicare. In fact, about the only ones that are include those that the doctor administers in his office–usually in the form of an injection.   If you want full coverage, you will have to take out a supplemental policy from–you guessed it.  One of the private health insurance predators.

              All in all on average, in order to be fully covered under Medicare, you will be paying out from $200 to $300 a month.

              NO MEDICARE IS NOT FREE.

              Now I just heard on Hardball that the 55 to 65 that are being proposed to be covered by Medicare will again have to pay.  Their payment instead of being $100 a month will most likely be about $400 a month with all the same gaps in coverage that the 65 an over must cover.

              THIS IS THE BEST THAT OUR CONGRESS CAN DO?

              THE ANSWER IS YES AS LONG AS WE HAVE MULTIMILLIONAIRES RUNNING OUR SENATE WHO MAKE HUGE PROFITS FROM THE PRIVATE HEALTH INSURANCE CORPORATIONS.

              BUT PLEASE!  WON’T SOMEONE TELL THE TV PUNDITS LIKE CHRIS MATTHEWS AND OTHERS TO STOP REFERRING TO MEDICARE AS “SINGLE PAYER!”  It is anything BUT.

              And if you think that paying $400 a month for partial coverage is a deal–then all I have to say is that you are completely brainwashed.

                  Anne Johnson’s story:

                  Anne Johnson lost coverage for herself and her 18-year-old son in February when she lost her job as a secretary at a solar energy company, where she was earning about $25,000 per year.

                  Shortly before she was laid off, a cardiologist told her she needs her aortic valve replaced, but without insurance she can’t afford the surgery. She is supposed to get checkups every six months, but that is also too expensive – so she has put them off. Her last visit to the cardiologist was in January, so she is already three months overdue.

                  “Right now I have no idea what type of condition I’m in,” Johnson said.

                  What health care reform would mean for her:

                  Johnson’s son may already qualify for Medi-Cal, the state’s Medicaid program, which covers low-income children if they do not have private insurance, because her son is under age 21. (We let Johnson know that her son may be eligible.)

                  But if she gets a job that pays roughly the same as she earned before but does not provide health insurance, he would most likely lose his Medi-Cal coverage. The House reform plan , and the Senate Finance Committee plan would standardize Medicaid eligibility across states to 133 percent of the federal poverty line, which amounts to $19,378 for a family of two. The plan from the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee (known as the HELP committee) would expand it to 150 percent of the poverty line, still only $21,855.

                  Johnson would be able to purchase private health insurance from a gateway or exchange, a state-based pool offering a menu of private insurance plans. The House and the Senate HELP bills would also offer her a public plan.

                  Her low income would qualify her for a subsidy to help buy insurance through the exchange, according to all three reform proposals.

                  The House plan and the Senate Finance Committee plan would allow Johnson to choose from four levels of coverage ranging from basic to premium, while the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee does not specify levels of coverage.

                  But if Johnson remains uninsured, she will have to pay a hefty tax penalty: All three plans impose a highly controversial tax penalty on uninsured individuals. The HELP bill would impose a penalty of $750 per year per person, so Johnson would have to pay $1,500. The Senate Finance plan phases in a penalty of $750 per year per uninsured adult, so Johnson would pay the same amount since her son is  18. The House bill would fine families the cost of a basic health insurance plan from the health exchange, up to 2.5 percent of their taxable income.  SOURCE

                  As I’ve mention before, this BS  of “four levels of coverage ranging from basic to premium” is just that BS.  What happens to Americans who have basic and they need a heart surgery that is not covered under “basic”.

                  THEN WHAT?  TOUGH LUCK?

                  WELL, HOW  THE HELL IS THAT ANY DIFFERENT FROM WHAT WE HAVE NOW?  The only difference I see is that Americans will pay a $750 fine if they don’t agree to support  Corporate Welfare.
