A hero from Queens

QUEEN’S PROLOGUE
Interesting, isn’t it, how often we find that those who can least afford it often extend the largest helping hand to others. Perhaps it’s because they are so close the real world of Main Street that they know what it really means to be without hope and hungry.

We should take a lesson from Jorge and elect people to Congress who are more like him and less like the multimillionaires that we have in Congress. It is people like Jorge who understands what it means to live on Main Street—not people like Evan Byah, Eric Cantor, Rham Emanuel, David Vitter, the Obamas or the Clintons.

After his bus driver shift, ATU Local 1181 member Jorge Munoz feeds the hungry in Queens seven days a week.

There are two things the hungry, jobless and likely homeless men and women in Jackson Heights, Queens, N.Y., can count on every night. Jorge Munoz, a school bus driver and Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) Local 1181 member, will be there at 73rd Street and Roosevelt Avenue, and he will be there with hot food, coffee and hot chocolate.

Munoz began his drive to feed the hungry in 2004 by collecting leftovers from local businesses and distributing sack lunches, an effort that has evolved into his now nightly hot meals. To date, the Colombian immigrant, who is now a U.S. citizen, has served more than 70,000 meals.

Dubbed an “Angel in Queens” by The New York Times and one of CNN’s Top 10 “Heroes,” Munoz says:

When I see these guys on the street, it’s like seeing me, 20-something years ago when I came to this country.

Re White House is upset about poster

August 11, 2009 in Blue Dog Jackasses, Democrats in Action, Healthcare, Holiday News, Hunger

I read this morning that the White House is upset over the poster featuring a little girl who asks:  Obama’s daughters get healthy school lunches, why don’t I?

The first thought that popped into my head when I read that was the real answer to that question:  Because they are rich and you are not. Because their parents can afford to pay $60,000 a year in tuition alone for their children–more than most parents earn in a year in the USA.

    ***********************************************

Yes, I can see the Obama’s side of the argument that they don’t want their children drawn into this. And I can understand the argument that it is not the Obama’s daughters “fault” that their parents are rich.  On the one hand, as a parent,  I am sympathetic and in agreement with those arguments.  On the other hand, those posters remind me of a HUGE PROBLEM that we have with those who purport to represent us in the USA:  These people are rich while most of us are not. This is an issue. Wealth and class are HUGE issues in the USA.  They are one of the 800 pound gorillas that we sit with in the living room.

MOST OF THE PEOPLE WHO REPRESENT US IN CONGRESS ARE MULTIMILLIONAIRES WHO HAVE LARGE INVESTMENTS IN WALL STREET, WHOSE LIVES ARE SO FAR REMOVED FROM THE LIVES THAT MOST OF US LIVE THAT I AND OTHER AMERICANS ARE BEGINNING TO ASK HOW THE HELL THESE PEOPLE CAN REPRESENT US WHEN THEY HAVE NO IDEA THE WAY WE LIVE?

    *********************************************************

These people are so out of touch with Americans and what is REALLY happening on Main Street that they, aided by mainstream media who also represent the minority of the rich in our nation, refused to even allow a discussion of Single Payer Healthcare–the only option that can provide healthcare to all the people in this nation is not even on the table for discussion?

AND WORSE!  The man that President Obama selected to hammer out a healthcare solution in the Senate has no one on his team who is representative of the American people and they have come up with a plan that doesn’t even HAVE a public option?

THIS IS DEMOCRACY?  PLEASE!  THESE PEOPLE NEED TO LEARN THE DEFINITION OF THE WORD!

    **********************************************

HERE IS PERHAPS A BETTER QUESTION FOR THAT POSTER:

DO YOU KNOW WHY MOST POOR CHILDREN ARE FAT AND RICH CHILDREN ARE NOT?

It is primarily because the parents of poor children can’t afford to pay for healthy nutrition and rich parents can.

It is more expensive to eat healthy fresh vegetables and fruit–Been to the grocery store lately?

    ******************************************************

Rich people who can afford to send their children to private schools instead of public schools are not as vested in supporting public schools as those whose children and grandchildren do attend public schools.

Rich people whose children don’t have to eat the obese creating  hot lunches dished up at public schools are not as vested in supporting good nutrition for all children.

Rich people who do not have to worry about health care insurance for themselves AND who also receive money from health care insurers are not as vested in seeing that all Americans (not just a few) receive affordable healthcare AND they are not as bothered by the abuse that is committed by every single one of these private health care insurers against their customers.

Jim Hightower meets with CWA as a part of an Employee Free Choice Act mobilization

August 1, 2009 in Democrats in Action, Healthcare, Holiday News, Real Change, Single Payer, Take Action

Author and radio commentator Jim Hightower paid a visit to Colorado this week where he met with members of Communications Workers of America (CWA) District 7 as part of an Employee Free Choice Act mobilization campaign.

Hightower said the freedom to form unions and bargain is crucial to a healthy and fair economy.

Unions are the escalator to the middle class. Unions are the key to America’s productivity. Unions are a real hope for real change—fairness, justice, opportunity.

Hightower told CWA members they need to get involved and get active if the Employee Free Choice Act is to become law:

Now, we’ve put the Employee Free Choice Act on the table…are we going to give working people a chance again? This is when you have got to stand up.

When you stop in to visit you elected officials who will be home in August, in addition to telling them to support the Single Payer Solution for health care, then tell them to also support the Employee Free Choice Act.

Happy Winter Solstice from the Queen

December 21, 2008 in Holiday News

Here are a few celebrations for the shortest day of the year that I found in WIKI:

          AMATERASU

In late seventh century Japan, festivities were held to celebrate the reemergence of Amaterasu or Amateras, the sun goddess of Japanese mythology from her seclusion in a cave. Tricked by the other gods with a loud celebration, she peeks out to look and finds the image of herself in a mirror and is convinced by the other gods to return, bringing sunlight back to the universe.

          BEIWE CELEBRATION

The Saami, indigenous people of Finland, Sweden and Norway worship Beiwe, the sun-goddess of fertility and sanity. She travels through the sky in a structure made of reindeer bones with her daughter, Beiwe-Neia, to herald back the greenery on which the reindeer feed. On the winter solstice, her worshipers sacrifice white female animals, and with the meat, thread and sticks, bed into rings with ribbons. They also cover their doorposts with butter so Beiwe can eat it and begin her journey once again.

          Choimus, Chaomos (Kalash of Pakistan)

In the ancient traditions of the Kalash people of Pakistan, during winter solstice, a demigod  returns to collect prayers and deliver them to Dezao, the supreme being. “During this celebrations women and girls are purified by taking ritual baths. The men pour water over their heads while they hold up bread. Then the men and boys are purified with water and must not sit on chairs until evening when goat’s blood is sprinkled on their faces. Following this purification, a great festival begins, with singing, dancing, bonfires, and feasting on goat tripe and other delicacies.

There are many many other celebrations of light during December including Christmas and Hannukah.

Happy Thanksgiving! This is America’s 145th Celebration.

November 27, 2008 in Holiday News

Thanksgiving has been observed as a national holiday since 1863 when President Lincoln issued his Thanksgiving proclamation to be observed annually on the last Thursday of November.
Thanksgiving has been observed as a national holiday since 1863 when President Lincoln issued his Thanksgiving proclamation to be observed annually on the last Thursday of November.

It was cooked by four English women and two teen-age girls. They prepared food for about 90 American Indians and 50 colonists.

According to Josh Yearout, an archivist at Wichita State University, the food eaten that day was very different than what we eat during our Thanksgiving dinner. There was no flour for bread, no sugar, but perhaps wild honey, and no milk, cream, butter or cheese.

The menu included dried corn, pumpkins, venison, fish and possibly lobster or turkey.

Thanksgiving has been observed as a national holiday since 1863 when President Lincoln issued his Thanksgiving proclamation to be observed annually on the last Thursday of November. The only time the date was changed was in 1939 when President Franklin Roosevelt changed it to the third Thursday. Congress changed it back to the fourth Thursday in 1941.
