Finally sites are advocating taking your money out of a Wall Street bank and putting it into a local bank!

December 30, 2009 in Bailout, Banks, Corporate Greed, Economics and Ideology, Obama, Obama Administration, Stimulus, Uncategorized

Any ordinary American who still has an account with one to the ‘too big to fail” Wall Street predator banks has no right to complain about the economy–not until they put their money in a local bank and sell all their Wall Street stock.   WALL STREET IS NOT PART OF THE PROBLEM–IT AND THE PEOPLE WHO SUPPORT IT ARE THE PROBLEM

Finally, other sites like Huffington Post are reminding people that we do have choices.

As you’ve seen on my site the permanent question/statement at the top of my third right most column for the past four months: PUT YOUR MONEY IN A LOCAL BANK–Why support Wall Street? What have they ever done for you besides pick your pocket?

The American people do have choices.  MAKE THEM!  AND REMIND YOUR NEIGHBORS TO MAKE THEM AS WELL!

Proof that charity, as suggested by Cantor, is a bogus “let them eat cake Republican solution” that does not work.

You may recall that Eric Cantor suggested to a woman who asked what could be done for a friend who had no insurance and who had stomach tumors and needed an operation now.  Cantor suggested that there are a “lot of charities out there who might help her.”  Of course he didn’t name any specifically–that might have been helpful.  He just threw it out there–like so many other Republican generalizations–as if that solves the problem and absolves him of any further responsibility.

    REAL AMERICANS NEEDING REAL SOLUTIONS
    NOT CHARITY

For example, how about if Goldman Sachs pays back ALL the money that they have taken from the American people? Then we might be able to return a little bit of it to Americans like these:

As part of its Bearing Witness 2.0 project, the Huffington Post ran a list of the latest stories of how the charity plan isn’t working out for many Americans:

One woman, suffering from the late states of cancer and breathing with the help of an electrically-powered oxygen machine in Houston was notified by “Freedom Power” that her electricity will be shut off.

Another couple were are just $28,000 away from owning their home and now they face foreclosure.

One woman is 97 and homeless, living with her two sons in a Chevrolet Suburban in Los Angeles.

Funding for homeless shelters is is dwindling in New Haven, Conn.

Gaze upon the essense of hypocrisy: Kay Bailey Hutchison and John Cornyn

October 6, 2009 in 2011 Blue Dog Pasture, Bailout, Stimulus

Texas Lawmakers Who Voted Against The Recovery Act Now Beg For Stimulus Funds For NASA

Cornyn and Hutchison Every single Republican in the House voted against the $819 billion Recovery Act in January. Among the Republican senators who voted against the stimulus were Texas’ Kay Bailey Hutchison and John Cornyn. Both of them complained that they wanted to see more tax cuts rather than government spending.

But now, both Hutchison and Cornyn are pressuring the Obama administration to give Texas $3 billion in stimulus funds. The co-signers on the letter are a bipartisan group of the Texas delegation in the House, including 19 Republicans, all of whom also voted against the funds for which they’re now begging. The letter was drafted and circulated by GOP Rep. Pete Olson. From the letter:

Therefore, to ensure the U.S. maintains its leadership in human space exploration, we respectfully ask that you include in your promised amended budget request for NASA’s Exploration Systems a request to Congress to reallocate the necessary funds for NASA from the funds that we anticipate will remain available from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA). As of last month, less than 15 percent of ARRA funds had been expended.

Since the stated purpose of the stimulus package was to secure good jobs and stabilize our economy, there is no better investment that could be made than the addition of up to $3 billion to NASA in FY2010, and the projection of at least that level of increase, as recommended by your Committee, at a 2.4% rate of inflation in the out-year projections included in the initial FY2010 Request.

Apparently Europeans have a different standard: Not OK “Buy American” OK “Buy European”

After Inconclusive Meeting, Still No Decision on Opel

Talks on a rescue plan for Opel, the German subsidiary of ailing US carmaker General Motors, ended with many questions left unanswered.

The talks on Friday, March 6, at Chancellor Angela Merkel’s office were called to discuss state aid for the GM offshoot, which reportedly needs 7 billion euros ($8.87 billion) to stay afloat.

After the meeting among General Motors Corp, its German subsidiary Adam Opel and government officials, the companies were asked to provide more information on a number of questions regarding Opel’s business and plans to make the unit viable.  MORE

Queen’s Comments: I had a sardonic chuckle when I watched a related video from Deutsche Welle and I heard Germany’s finance minister say that they needed more reassurances that state aid from Germany would stay in Germany and not cross the Atlantic.

Remember all the European fuss over the “buy American” clause that we had in our stimulus act?  Remember how the Europeans all got their panties in a bunch over that?  Looks like they have a different standard for “globalization” when it comes to their sharing.

Mr. Reagan, tear down those Solar Panels. Shucks, we don’t need solar panels.  That’s too liberal .

            *************************************************************

Ronnie must be twirling in his grave over the current fuss about cutting costs on energy.

Homeowners with drafty windows, old heating systems, or other root causes of high energy bills can be rewarded in tax season if they make improvements in 2009 or 2010.

“This is by far the most the federal government has done in the past several decades” to reward energy-efficiency investments, says Steven Nadel, executive director of the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy, a nonprofit organization in Washington, D.C. “In many cases, this will make the high-efficiency product cheaper than the low-efficiency product. [For consumers], this is pretty lucrative, and I’d be surprised if it gets extended into 2011.”

New incentives increase the size of tax credits for homeowners who buy qualifying products. For instance, those who invest in highly-rated insulation, replacement windows, duct seals, or high-efficiency heating and cooling systems can now receive a tax credit worth 30 percent of the upgrade cost (maximum credit value: $1,500).

Previously, homeowners could get a tax credit worth just 10 percent of an upgrade cost, up to a maximum of $500. Now, taxpayers who spend $800 on an efficient water heater, $1,000 on insulation, and $2,000 on windows could lop $1,140 off their federal tax bill.

            ****************************************************

Congress this month did away with caps on 30 percent tax credits for homeowners who install solar panels, geothermal heat pumps, or windmills. Now a $24,000 investment to make a home solar-powered would generate a federal tax credit worth $7,200. (Before the stimulus, credits were capped at $2,000 for geothermal and solar; $4,000 for wind).

            **************************************************

            QUEEN’S THOUGHTS ON ALL THIS:

            1.  Well and good for those Americans who can still afford to stay in their homes.

            2. How are the manufacturers of these goods chosen?  I wonder what the criteria is for the selection?

            3. I wonder what ever happened to the solar panels that Ronald Reagan ripped off the White House within the first month of his presidency?  I wonder how much THAT cost the taxpayers–not only in the cost of the solar panels themselves, but also in the cost of energy savings to the White House for the past 23 years* that would have been possible with solar panels.

            **************************************************

            * RE 23 years as opposed to 31 years:  Unlike Ronnie, George had solar panels installed on the White House grounds.

Yep we can all rip George many new ones, but we can’t fault him for allowing solar energy to be used on the White House grounds–although we must admit that his administration kept a VERY low profile on this story:

Since September 2002, a grid of 167 solar panels on the roof of a maintenance shed has been delivering electricity to the White House grounds.

With little fanfare, the Bush administration has installed three solarenergy systems on the grounds of the White House.

It happened late August of 2002, when, over the course of three days, the WhiteHouse had 167 solar energy panels placed atop a maintenance building outside the residence. On two other buildings — an adjoining maintenance building and the president’s cabana — systems were installed that will help heat the water for, among other uses, the presidential pool and spa.

None of the solar energy systems are visible from the street — you would have to climb to near the top of the adjacent Eisenhower ExecutiveOffice Building to see them. The systems were designed by Solar DesignAssociates of Massachusetts.

Where is your Money Going?  [MOST OF IT FOR TAX CUTS]

As you can see, the majority of this money, unfortunately, is going to tax relief.  According to the temper tantrums that Republican leadership were throwing, you would have thought that their favorite solution, cut taxes, was going to figure down near the bottom with education.  Trust me, people, with rich centrist democrats driving this administration, tax cuts will always be at the top.

              Timeline–Milestones at a Glance
Below the bar chart we have the beginning of the detailed pieces of the accountability.  I am especially interested in the part that will begin July 15, 2009:  Recipients of Federal funding begin reporting on their use of funds.

QUEEN’S COMMENTS--This movie shows the horrible life of street children.  It is the movie that I hope wins for best picture.  The movie is set in India, but it could be any major city in the world.  Many people all over the world have been displaced because of globalization.

Colombia is one of the countries who bears this heavy burden as it has the second largest number of displaced people in the world. Somalia is number one.  Many of these are children fending on the streets in urban areas every day for their daily bread.  School?  Not a chance.  Childhood?  Not a chance. Beggars are so prevalent in urban areas in Colombia that the government has actually posted etiquette rules regarding how to respond to them.

I look forward to the improved treatment of children since the party who cut hot lunch programs and designated Ketchup as a vegetable are not in power.  But there is a lot of work to do to make up for over 30 years of neglect.

The Children’s Defense Fund in its 2007 annual report offers a range of statistics that provide a despairing glimpse of the current crisis facing too many children in America. What is one to make of a society marked by the following conditions:

              • Almost 13 million children in America live in poverty – 5.5 million in extreme poverty.
              • 4.2 million children under the age of five live in poverty.
              • 35.3 percent of black children, 28.0 percent of Latino children and 10.8 percent of white, non-Latino children live in poverty.
              • There are 9.4 million uninsured children in America.
              • Latino children are three times as likely, and black children are 70 percent more likely, to be uninsured than white children.
              • Only 11 percent of black, 15 percent of Latino and 41 percent of white eighth graders perform at grade level in math.
              • Each year 800,000 children spend time in foster care.
              • On any given night, 200,000 children are homeless – one out every four of the homeless population.
              • Every 36 seconds a child is abused or neglected – almost 900,000 children each year.
              • Black males ages 15-19 are about eight times as likely as white males to be gun homicide victims.
              • Although they represent 39 percent of the US juvenile population, minority youth represent 60 percent of committed juveniles.
              • A black boy born in 2001 has a 1 in 3 chance of going to prison in his lifetime; a Latino boy has a 1 in 6 chance. .  . “SOURCE from Henry A. Giroux, TruthOut.  Read the entire article.  It’s an eye-opener.

As the Rude Pundit hilariously points out in his post yesterday, Republican Governors Bobby Jindal of Louisiana, Mark Sanford of South Carolina, and Sarah Palin are full of lying Republican hot air and BS when they posture as if they will turn down money coming into their states for the stimulus.

The law says in all their legislatures that they can take the money without the governor’s approval. So they can posture as if they are against it while still accepting the funds at the same time.  Nice game, but they need to remember that old adage: You can fool some of the people all of the time.  You can fool all of the people some of the time.  But you can never fool all of the people all of the time.
