New Egyptian independent labor union formed; calls for celebration on Sunday!

April 29, 2011 in Egypt

New Egyptian independent labour union calls for celebrations in Tahrir
Ridding themselves of Egypt’s old regime labour union, a new independent labour union details their next steps, including the Labour Day Tahrir celebration on Sunday!

The Egyptian revolution has opened the door for workers’ unions to mobilise in Egypt – and it is bearing fruit. The Egypt Federation for Independent Unions was established as a result of the revolution and gave their first press conference yesterday at their headquarters to raise the curtain on the 1 May Labour Day and to explain several issues.

This is what happens when the people are in charge instead of the plutocrats: Unions that protect workers are formed, not destroyed.

Congratulations to the Egyptian people.  May the American people learn from your examples.

Going Backstage with the Hidden Persuaders and their Schemes

    April 29, 2011 in Propaganda

Remember:  Today is Friday and all the important stuff happens between 4:30 pm Friday and 7 pm Sunday. Read at least two foreign news sources this weekend.  You might be surprised at what you discover. Al Jazeera, BBC News, and the Guardian are good starting places.

Here is the first draft of the Foreword from my upcoming book:  Going Backstage with the HIdden Persuaders and Their Schemes

Soon my book will be available on Lulu publications in paperback and in the form of digital download (for a nominal fee of $5)

    Happy weekend.

    Foreword

We are at a crossroads in our history as a nation.  If the majority of ordinary citizens like you and me from Main Street don’t take a stand, turn our backs on the millionaire plutocrat leadership in Washington D.C. and take the reigns of our Democracy, not only will the middle class be wiped out, but much of the working class as well.  Many of us will be reduced literally to the status of beggars.

In place of public education, our children will be put to work for pennies.  If you don’t believe this then you haven’t heard of the school voucher scheme that Betsy DeVos and the other billionaire families  (Koch, Mellon-Scaife, Olin, etc.) are pushing in Republican legislatures all over the USA.  These plutocrats want to replace our public education with school vouchers for tuition to private schools.  If you think that these vouchers would cover the cost of a child’s education in a private school, you are wrong.  If you think that the majority of American parents can afford to make up the difference between what the voucher covers and the cost of a private education, you are wrong.

So what will happen to our children?  They will be put to work.  Republican governors like Paul LePage of Maine are pushing for legislation to dismantle child labor laws.  If Governor LePage gets his way, children in Maine as young as 11 years of age will be able to work.  Of course, in keeping with the Republican dogma that labor should be free, these children would be paid $5.00 an hour instead of the minimum wage rate.

In a piece that he wrote on March 29, 2002, titled THE SMOKE MACHINE, Paul Krugman warned that the “vast right-wing conspiracy” is not an overheated metaphor but a straightforward reality and that is works like a special-interest lobby:

” . . . It’s a shame that so much of David Brock’s ‘Blinded by the Right:  The conscience of an ex-conservative’ is about the private lives of our self-appointed moral guardians.  These tales will sell books, but they may obscure the important message:  That the ‘vast right-wing conspiracy’ is not an overheated metaphor but a straightforward reality, and that it works a lot like a special-interest lobby. . . The scandal machine that employed Mr. Brock was, in effect, a special-interest group financed by a handful of wealthy families–men like the Rev. Sun Myung Moon whose cult like Unification Church owns ‘The Washington Times’; and Richard Mellon Scaife who bankrolled the scandal-mongering ‘American Spectator’ and many other right-wing enterprises.  It was effective because the typical news consumer didn’t realize what was going on.

The group’s efforts managed to turn Whitewater–a $200,000 money-losing investment into a byword for scandal, even thought an eight year, $73 million investigation never did find any evidence of wrongdoing by the Clintons. . .

Clearly scandalmongering works. . . all too readily [people] assume that where there’s smoke there must be fire–when in reality it’s just some angry rich guys who have bought themselves a smoke machine. . . .”

I agree with Krugman.  There is a conspiracy against the majority of us who live on Main Street and it is largely led by right-wing ideologues.  However, if you think that liberal millionaires and billionaires are all that different, then you number among those who are hoodwinked.   A plutocrat is a plutocrat.  It is true that right-wing conservatives want the entire cake, but it is just as true that the Democratic wealthy are only willing to throw crumbs to the rest of us.  Neither party is willing to invite those of us from Main Street to sit down at the banquet table with them and dine.

This book tells the stories of how the plutocrats maintain control and what we can do to take it back and create a democracy that works for all of the people—not merely the upper 2%.

Now is the time to organize for 2012.  Now is the time to wary of the “grass roots” movement such as the “Tea Party” that was funded by billionaire David Koch.  They will be working harder than ever in the coming months selling us their propaganda and lies.

Turn away from them.  Run for office yourself.  Support your neighbor whom you know and trust.

We outnumber them and that scares them senseless—as it should.  We are the ones with the power and they know it.  Too bad that most of us on Main Street don’t realize it because that is the ONLY reason that the upper 1% remain in control of us–because we allow them to.  We even invite them to.  We must wake up before it is too late–not only for us, but for our children as well.

      ON THIS DAY . . .

April 28, 2011 in Class War

      Thursday April 28, 2011

On this day in 1945, right-wing dictator Benito Mussolini and his mistress Clara Petacci were executed by a firing squad consisting of members of the Italian Resistance movement.

On this day in 1996 Whitewater controversy: President Bill Clinton gives a 4½ hour videotaped testimony for the defense. [NOTE: this is what the conservatives do when they don't have control of Washington.  They waste the taxpayers' money with frivolous trials which is all the more ironic since one of their battle cries is tort reform.  For the Whitewater case they spent $73 million dollars of the taxpayers money and not a shred of evidence was ever found to prove that the Whitewater case was anything other than a $200,000 investment loss for the Clintons and a $73 million dollar tax revenue loss for the American people--money that could have been spent on our infrastructure, our roads, our bridges, our schools.]

But the conservatives don’t care.  As long as they can keep the Democrats busy with pseudo trials, they won’t have time left to pass legislation that can help the majority.

They are pulling the same sort of nonsense with Obama today to discredit him as president.  For the two years that he has been in office we have had the birther campaign.  Now that has ended, but believe me, it’s only a matter of time until they drum up yet another pseudo scandal.  As long as they are “dealing” with the ‘important’ scandal, then the Republican/Tea Party idiots in the House don’t have to be accountable for their zero job creation efforts.

      QUEEN’S COMMENTS

I never cease to be amazed at the serendipitous flow of life.  Yesterday, while working on my propaganda book, I researched and wrote a piece on David Brock, one of Mellon Scaife’s pimps who helped created the right-wing pseudo Whitewater scandal.  Now today, in my research for my Emma.org site’s daily feature of “on this day” I find this tidbit about Bill Clinton’s testimony.

These pseudo scandals funded and driven by billionaire right-wing ideologues like the Mellon-Scaifes, the Koches, the DeVos, etc. have cost the American taxpayers in the billions of dollars and have done untold damage to the infrastructure of our nation.  Instead of using our money wisely and for the people, it has been thrown away on frivolous lawsuits orchestrated by these rich devils.

They all have one purpose:  to derail our government and our Democracy.

We outnumber them.  We can stop them.  Tell your neighbor.  There is about a 95% chance that any one of the 261 millionaires in our Congress today selected at random would be one who represents Wall Street–not you.

Hell yes this is a class war and as soon as a few more Americans realize that we can get on with the second American Revolution by kicking the millionaires out of our government.

Who knows David Brock? A man who damaged people’s lives with his lies.

April 28, 2011 in Class War, Propaganda

It will be a wonder if I have even a handful of readers left on my blog by the time I finish my book on propaganda in USA as I’ve been so neglectful with my posts over the past few weeks.  The least I can do is share a few tidbits from my upcoming book with you as I go.  Here is one from yesterday.

Liz–iflizwerequeen . . .and wishes were horses, there would be no beggars, not a single one!

        Photobucket DAVID BROCK

I wonder if you were to randomly ask people on the street, how many of them would know who David Brock is? Those inside the Beltway way will know the name–at least those who have been around for 10 or 11 years, but I doubt that even 1/3 of Main Street Americans know his name or what he did.

He was a conservative journalist during the 1990s gaining notoriety for his book The Real Anita Hill and authoring the Troopergate story, which led to Paula Jones filing a lawsuit against Bill Clinton. At the start of the Presidency of George W. Bush his views shifted significantly towards the left. He founded Media Matters for America, a non-profit organization that describes itself as a “progressive research and information center dedicated to comprehensively monitoring, analyzing and correcting conservative misinformation in the U.S. media.  Many of his stories appeared in the right-wing propaganda rag, American Spectator.

But then in July 1997, Brock published a confessional piece in Esquire magazine titled “Confessions of a Right-Wing Hit Man,” in which he recanted much of what he said in his two best-known American Spectator articles and criticized his own reporting methods.

Writing again for Esquire in April 1998, Brock apologized to Clinton for his contributions to Troopergare,  calling it simply part of an anti-Clinton crusade. He told a more detailed story of his time inside the right wing in his 2001 memoir, Blinded by the Right: The Conscience of an Ex-Conservative, in which he settled old scores and provided inside details about the Arkansas Project’s   efforts to bring down Clinton. Later, he also apologized to Anita Hill.

        QUEENS COMMENTS

From a piece that truth teller Paul Krugman wrote on March 29, 2002, titled THE SMOKE MACHINE on the fact that the “vast right-wing conspiracy” is not an overheated metaphor but a straightforward reality and that is works like a special-interest lobby:

        QUEEN’S ADDENDUM

Just in case you are thinking this is all “water under the king’s bridge”, these rich guys who are shredding our Democracy are alive and well.  For example, Richard Mellon-Scaife’s family fortune combined with that of the Koch empire and the DeVos family [Amway schemes] are behind the current mission to dismantle public education in the USA and replace it with school vouchers.  This movement dovetails nicely into Governor Paul LePage’s plan to remove child labor laws in the state of Maine.  You see, there is not a ghost’s chance in hell that these school vouchers will cover payment for a child’s education in a private school. The majority of parents are doing good to feed their children and keep a roof over their heads these days.  Private school tuition?  You gotta be kidding.  Unfortunately people like the DeVos, Koch and Mellon Scaife families are not.  Thus we can’t have all these kids who can’t afford to go to school running about while their parents are working–we’ll just put them to work too.

THAT’S THE PLAN FOLKS–IF THEY CAN TRICK DUMB AND DUMBER INTO FALLING FOR IT.

I suggest that we trick them by getting smart and smarter.  We outnumber them.  Never forget that.  We outnumber them. We can overthrow them and we need to begin with the 261 millionaires in our Congress.  Their interests are not aligned with the interests of the majority.

President Obama released the long form of his Birth Certificate

            April 27, 2011 in Obama

Do you think it will shut up the moron birther fanatics?

            Don’t hold your breath.

The President believed the distraction over his birth certificate wasn’t good for the country. It may have been good politics and good TV, but it was bad for the American people and distracting from the many challenges we face as a country. Therefore, the President directed his counsel to review the legal authority for seeking access to the long form certificate and to request on that basis that the Hawaii State Department of Health make an exception to release a copy of his long form birth certificate. They granted that exception in part because of the tremendous volume of requests they had been getting. President Barack Obama’s long form birth certificate can be seen here (PDF):

              Joseph Eugene Stiglitz

A recipient of the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences (2001), Stiglitz is also the former Senior Vice President and Chief Economist of the World Bank who is known for his critical view of the management of globalization,  free-market economists (whom he calls “free market fundamentalists”).  In 2000, Stiglitz founded the Initiative for Policy Dialogue (IPD), a think tank on international development based at Columbia University where he has been a member of the Columbia faculty since 2001.

In Globalization and Its Discontents (2002), Stiglitz argues that what are often called “developing economies” are, in fact, not developing at all, and puts much of the blame on the IMF.

He complains that the IMF has done great damage through the economic policies it has prescribed that countries must follow in order to qualify for IMF loans, or for loans from banks and other private-sector lenders that look to the IMF to indicate whether a borrower is creditworthy. The organization and its officials, he argues, have ignored the implications of incomplete information, inadequate markets, and unworkable institutions—all of which are especially characteristic of newly developing countries.

As a result, Stiglitz argues, the IMF has often called for policies that conform to textbook economics but do not make sense for the countries to which the IMF is recommending them. Stiglitz seeks to show that these policies have been disastrous for the countries that have followed them.

His indictment of the Federal Reserve is also quite accurate:  “Fed policies worked only by replacing the tech bubble with a housing bubble. In virtually every interpretation of the crisis the Fed was at the center of the creation of this and the previous bubble.  In the Frankenstein laboratories of Wall Street, banks created new risk products. . .without mechanisms to manage the monster they had created.  Meanwhile, innovation on Wall Street was directed at circumventing regulations, accounting standards and taxation.”

According to Stiglitz, the Obama administration did not communicate a clear view/explanation of why the U.S. financial system failed [nor have they yet]. Thus they continue to flounder and muddle through taking two steps forward and one backward. The Obama administration has done little more than offer the usual platitudes of better regulations and more responsible banking practices. Instead of redesigning the system, the Obama administration, with the approval of the 261 millionaires from both parties in Congress have spent the taxpayer’s money reinforcing the existing failed system.

Any why haven’t they done the necessary extensive overhauling?  This is an important question that more Americans need to start asking and demanding an answer. They haven’t communicated a clear explanation of why the U.S. financial system has failed because they know if they do that the American people will demand that its restructuring begin now. They continue to apply cosmetic patches to this broken system we call Wall Street because they belong to the upper 2%.  The Wall Street economy works for them and that is why they are so hesitant to provide it with the severe overhaul including installation of many regulatory mechanisms that it needs in order to make it work for 98% of our population instead of only 2%.

It’s not that they don’t know what is wrong.  It’s not even that they don’t know what to do.  It’s that they don’t want to do what is necessary because to do so will diminish their personal fortunes.  They would rather continue to take from the majority.

Stiglitz was right when he wrote that President Obama who campaigned on the promise of “change that  you can believe in” has only slightly rearranged the deck chairs on the Titanic.  But what would you expect when President Obama installs someone like Lawrence Summers who proclaimed that one of his greatest achievements as Secretary of the Treasury in 1999-2001 was ensuring that the explosive derivatives would remain unregulated.

As far as I can tell, I see nothing but the mentality of “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it” coming from the millionaires in Obama’s administration. For them and for the 261 millionaires in Congress (such as Paul Ryan, Sensenbrenner, Boehner, McConnell, etc.) the casino is working just fine.  The “jobless recovery” for them was over by February of 2009.  They have ALL recovered financially and you can check their tax return statements if you need verification.  They are not suffering one iota–least of all the President himself. In 2008 his net worth was at $799,00.  On April 15, 2010 he indicated at net worth on his tax forms of slightly over $10 million.  President Obama himself is doing just fine with the Wall Street Casino.  Then people like Ben Bernanke and Tim Geithner have the nerve to tell the American people that the economic recovery will be slow for the majority—that we will likely have to wait until 2016.  Shame on them all!  Their greedy misbehavior is sentencing our nation and the majority of its people to the status of a second class economy.

They know exactly what they are doing and they may be fooling some of the people, but I’m not one of them and I hope that you are not either.

Race Riots in the USA have a long history

April 27, 2011 in Class War

While doing some research this morning I came across this tidbit in Wiki.  I did not realize such riots took place in Detroit prior to  the 1960′s. Often I’m shocked by my own ignorance of the history of my nation.

The Detroit Race Riot broke out in Detroit, Michigan in June 1943 and lasted for three days before Federal troops restored order. The rioting between blacks and whites began on Belle Isle on 20 June 1943 and continued until 22 June, killing 34, wounding 433, and destroying property valued at $2 million.

                ******************************************

Note:  I was well aware of the race problems in Detroit in the 1960′s.

In Detroit, during the 1960s the “Big Four” or “Tac Squad”roamed the streets, searching for bars to raid and prostitutes to arrest. These elite 4 man units frequently stopped youths who were driving or walking through the 12th street neighborhood. They verbally degraded these youths, calling them “boy” and “nigger”, asking them who they were and where they were going. (Fine 1989:98). Most of the time, black residents were asked to produce identification, and having suffered their requisite share of humiliation, were allowed to proceed on their way. But if one could not produce “proper” identification, this could lead to arrest or worse. In a few notable cases, police stops led to the injury or death of those who were detained. Such excessive use of force was manifested in the 1962 police shooting of a black prostitute named Shirley Scott who, like Lester Long of Newark, was shot in the back while fleeing from the back of a patrol car. Other high profile cases of police brutality in Detroit included the severe beating of another prostitute, Barbara Jackson, in 1964, and the beating of Howard King, a black teenager, for “allegedly disturbing the peace”. (Fine 1989:117) But the main issue in the minds of Detroit’s black residents was police harassment and police brutality, which they identified in a Detroit Free Press Survey as the number one problem they faced in the period leading up to the riot. (Detroit Free Press 1968, Fine 1989, Thomas 1967). According to a Detroit Free Press Survey, residents reported police brutality as the number as the number one problem they faced in the period leading up to the riot. (Detroit Free Press 1968, Fine 1989, Thomas 1967).

                ************************************************

We know the root of all this evil and most of the evil that is being perpetrated on the majority of American citizens. For, example, the origins of urban unrest in Detroit were rooted in a multitude of political, economic, and social factors including police abuse, lack of affordable housing, urban renewal projects, economic inequality,  and rapid demographic change.

We know and yet we do nothing to implement real solutions.

                Don’t you ever wonder why?

TOMORROW APRIL 28 IS WORKERS MEMORIAL DAY

April 27, 2011 in Class War

Each year on April 28, Workers Memorial Day, working people throughout the world remember those who were hurt or killed on the job and renew our struggle for safe workplaces. In town squares and union halls, at worksites and memorials, in community after community—we are gathering to remember our brothers and sisters who have lost their lives and to fight for safe workplaces and for good jobs for all workers.

This year is especially noteworthy. It’s the 100th anniversary of the Triangle Shirtwaist factory fire, where 146 workers were killed after being trapped behind locked doors with no way to escape. This year is also the 40th anniversary of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the right of workers to a safe job.

Workplace fatalities and injuries have significantly declined. This progress didn’t just happen because the OSHA law and mine safety law were passed. It happened because workers and their unions organized, fought and demanded action from employers and their government.

Join us in mourning the dead and fighting for the living.
